I’m revising my review. First off, let me say this review is about Gazelltek and how they stand behind their products. If you read my prior review (and I hope you didn’t), I left a scathing review of the “electric” pencil sharpener. Here’s the deal… I bought one of these for my sketching and it worked great. Then I started an art course that used charcoal pencils. I bought another one when I was visiting the grandkids in Charlotte. When I tried using it — DISASTER! It chewed up my charcoal pencils (which ain’t cheap!), broke the points, it was a NIGHTMARE! So I wrote a scathing review … and … bought a sharpener from Staples. (It wasn’t the best but was recommended by the art course and, at least, didn’t destroy my pencils. A week or so after I wrote the review, Gazelltek emailed me and offered to refund the money I paid for the sharpener or send me a new one. I told them … “Forget it.” Not that I’m rich but I didn’t need their refund and I wanted to remember NEVER to use their sharpener with my charcoal pencils. But … they persisted. They offered to send me both a new electric … and … a manual sharpener. So I relented and they arrived today. When I opened the manual sharpener I though, “Holy crap … it’s plastic.” I didn’t even want to fool with it. I was reach to reseal the package and have UPS pick it up. Then, my wife tried the manual sharpener and said, “This is fantastic!” When she showed me the pencil point I was amazed. So I said, “Well, the test is the charcoal pencil.” So I went out into my studio and grabbed one of them. I put it through the manual sharpener and was absolutely blown away with how easy it was to get a great point. I was still afraid to use the electric sharpener based on my prior experience. So … I figured I needed to try it. To Gazell’s point, they said the sharpener could have been defective. (When I put the pencil into the sharpener, the selector switch at the top spun around. When I sharpened the pencil it came out perfect (the image with the electric sharpener in the background). So…I have to retract my original 1 star review and replace it with this one. Not only does Gazelltek make great sharpeners, they stand behind their products 100%. Gazelltek has redefined pencil sharpeners — kudos to them! Thank you for being patient with me. (I bought two more manual sharpeners and will pay for the manual they sent me.) If you need a pencil sharpener – especially for your artwork – these are the ones to buy – period … end of story!Read more

This arrived today, along with my 22 Mitsubishi Hi-Uni graphite pencils. It has exceeded my expectations. I plugged it in and tested it first with a few random pencils I had. At first I thought it was a failure – it worked for a second or two and then stopped (as other reviewers have mentioned), however, after letting it charge for a few minutes and then UNPLUGGING IT, the sharpener worked perfectly. I started with it on the short setting to get the lead sharp at the end, then switched to the long setting to make it drawing length. It sharpened the full case without issue.Read more

There is no doubt this is a great sharpener. The only thing I would mention is that my Derwent pencils are too big for this sharpener. It works well with Prismacolor and Irojiten colored pencils though.Read more

But in practice they fall very short of the mark. A big part of the problem is that at least on my unit, and unreasonable amount of downward pressure was required to active the sharpener. That means that you are pushing very hard to get started, and breaking pencils becomes an issue. Also, the grind creates so much torque, that you must grip the thing with your free hand to keep it from spinning, and, then there is a lot of torque on the pencil. So I had to fight all these forces, and it was hard to keep the pencil straight into the sharpener, creating more problems. Also, stopping the grind is a problem, as it coasts for a while, and you have been fighting all these forces, so I ended up frequently slightly getting off center, which of course broke off the long delicate tip I just created. It’s a good idea, and sometimes, when it worked, it created a wonderful tip. But the amount of time spent redoing grinds (not to mention the wasted pencil length) ended up about the same as just using an exacto knife. Then the final straw. Whilst wrestling with it once, it twisted out of my hand, broke the pencil, and landed on my toe. The pencil was not the only thing that was broken, the crappy grinder is now in pieces, and headed down the garbage shoot. I feel better.Read more

I’ve been collecting art supplies the last several weeks trying to see what works and what doesn’t. I’ve been drawing off and on for over 3 decades now (since elementary school), and have recently began adding color pencils, art pencils, etc to my arsenal. While I’ve been using mechanical pencils since I first started, I feel like traditional wooden pencils allow me to be more loose when sketching, as well as being easier to blend and rub for certain shading techniques. Before getting this sharpener, I used a simple, small manual one that did the trick, but there was no variety in the lead sharpness or length. This sharpener is so fast and does the long and extra long lead that I’m looking forward to trying it a few new techniques I’ve seen via YouTube that weren’t available to me before getting this. Definitely worth it if you use wooden and color pencils on a regular basis.Read more

NOT heavy duty at all. I need sharp pencils for finish carpentry & projects, I use the Misubishi pencils and upgraded to this sharpener from my old Bostich that sharpened slightly off center – hoping to get a nice long point. The problem is that the motor has no torque. When inserting pencils, it immediately jams and they have to be lifted up and down several times to release the jam and sharpen. I use the shortest setting, but because of the nature of the sharpener and having to push the pencil in and out several times, it inevitably spins itself to the longest setting which results in more jams and up and downing….grrr. Also it is USB powered, I was leaving it plugged in all the time because im not moving it around and it has been “dead” before and I had to unplug and “restart” by plugging it back in and waiting for the charge to build up. Im looking for something else, too much hassle. “Heavy duty” in the product description is misleading… ..Read more

Everybody who has trained in an Atelier knows how long it takes to sharpen a point with a razor and then sanding it Only to have it roll off your table onto a cement floor .. ( collective groan) This is the first sharpener that I’ve tried can quickly give you a clean long point , I’m done with hand sharpening . 5 stars.Read more

Love the long point, love the quality – sturdy, long battery life after 1 charge, large tank for shaves. I actually bought 2 of these (1 for home use, 1 for class use). And have recommended a friend to buy it too. My friend also likes it! The only downside is the tip of pencil is not as sharpened as the manual sharpeners. And it couldn’t sharpen pencils when it gets to the length of 1/3. However, this doesn’t bother me, as it was really convenient to use.Read more

Impressive sharpener! This sharpener is Quality throughout! It recharged quickly and holds the charge well. The components are made with strong quality parts. There are 2 settings for the length. I did research prior to my purchase and I am very pleased!

I love this sharpner for a few reasons. First, it gives a nice, long sharp point on the pencil. Second, if a lead breaks, you don’t have to try to dig it out, it just pushes out. Yay! I use this with my pastel pencils and sometimes those leads break in a sharpner but rairly in this one and it does push out the lead. One small adjustment I wish they would make – I wish the hole was a bit bigger as it’s a tight fit and not all kinds of pencils will fit. The sharpner is also small and doesn’t take up my whole desk and it’s portable with the rechargeable battery. This is a good sharpner.Read more
