This version of Canidae’s fish-based formula is, like the others, quite good, overall, as to ingredients, but not great. The taste is quite good, as they like it equally to other formulas, and the food is easy to mix with other things. There are really only two issues. Like many foods nowadays, they add unhealthy oils in place of healthy fats. Coconut Oil or a high quality Salmon or Krill Oil would be a good source of fat. Even Avocado Oil would be acceptable. They use Sunflower Oil which causes plaque build-up in the arteries. We won’t give our animals food we wouldn’t eat ourselves so we won’t be using this long term, for that reason. Were they to change to Organic Coconut Oil or a high quality Fish Oil that has been treated to remove metal, or drop the added oil altogether, this would instantly become one of the best foods on the market. Personally, I think they should just drop the oil in favor of adding back in a bit more fish, as the fish is why a person would buy this for their fur baby, and leave the choice of adding or not adding any additional fats to the person purchasing the food. The only other issue is that, in order to prove to people that they have added whole peas to the food, they fail to fully puree the food. It is not a pure pate which makes it a bit difficult to mix, fully, if you have finicky babies who prefer a smooth and uniform food. My dogs prefer smooth food, as we add so many other things to it, and it makes a nice base for that, but they seem to accept the presence of the peas, as long as I smash them up into more of a pea-paste, rather than leaving them whole in the food. Again, this is a high quality food from an excellent brand, however, it needs work. No dog food should contain any added oil There is more than enough high quality fat in fish to meet the fat requirements for the food. If there isn’t, then the food contains too many carbohydrate fillers and is not a good choice. If this food is released with no added oil and a little more fish, I will update my review but, as to the current formula, it is right about in the middle of the better foods, around four stars. Good luck finding the right food for your fur babies. In our home it is a mix of the best canned foods, pure fish, whole foods and the like, but even a canned food diet can be healthy, if it has quality ingredients, keeps the carbohydrates at the lower end and doesn’t add unhealthy or dangerous ingredients.Read more

My poor little one is allergic to a lot of food ingredients, so I’ve researched various foods for years and had a pretty good one I’ve been using for the last year. However, I thought the starchy sweet potato in his food might be causing too much yeast/itchiness on his skin (itching is his primary issue from food allergies). After even more research, I decided to try this one because it is limited in ingredients and doesn’t have anything that he’s had a negative reaction to in the past. I started him slowly, with just a little mixed into his normal food, and adding a bit more every few days. After three weeks, this was what he was eating for dinner. Right after he began eating just this food, he was a bit constipated and began throwing up early in the morning — frothy vomit with bile. That went on for three days in a row, with no other symptoms of illness at all. I thought this food might not be good, might have inflamed his stomach, so I stopped it immediately, and his constipation and vomiting ceased immediately. I’ve never seen that reaction with any other foods I’ve tried — he may get more itchy from others due to his allergies, but he’s never gotten ill. I would return it, but I bought a case and am now stuck with 9 cans of food I don’t trust to give to either of my little ones. I’m going back to my old brand (Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Venison & Sweet Potato).Read more

DO NOT FEED THIS TO YOUR DOG! There’s something horribly wrong with it! I’d previously bought the same salmon/sweet potato Canidae food at my local pet store, trying to find a salmon based food for my dog who has food sensitivities. We had nine cans of it, and my dog liked it and was doing well on it. When we were getting low on it, I ordered more from Amazon. The first can I opened from the new case did not look the same as what we bought locally, didn’t smell the same, and had a different texture. I checked the expiration date, and the food was not expired. At that point I incorrectly assumed that Canidae had reformulated their recipe, and I fed some of the new food to my dog. Unfortunately she became ill and vomited several times throughout the day. This food has either gone bad, or they’ve put the wrong product in the cans. I don’t know if it’s spoiled, or perhaps if it’s a different flavor, but either way, Canidae’s quality control is very poor. After my dog vomited the first time, I came back to the Amazon website to see if other’s had a problem with this food, and saw other reviews stating that their order of dog food also looked and smelled different. Please read all the reviews to understand that my problem with this food is not unique. There’s definitely something wrong with this and it should not be fed to your pet! I called Canidae to report the problem and request a refund. Based on the barrage of questions they asked me, it seemed that they wanted to blame me for letting my dog eat something else (she hadn’t eaten anything else), and deny that there was a problem with their food. I let them know that there were similar reviews here on Amazon, and that they should be aware of a serious, perhaps life threatening problem with their food. As for my refund request, they denied it and offered me a coupon to buy more food. I had to escalate my request to a manager who also could not provide me with a refund. I gave Canidae a try, but this problem is just too severe for me to trust them with the health of my dog again. I will never buy Canidae again, and a coupon is worthless to me. Fortunately, Amazon made an exception to their policy of not accepting returns on dog food, and refunded my money. Even more importantly, my dog seems to be feeling a bit better today. Please don’t buy this food for your dog. It should be recalled, but probably won’t be. It’s not fit for consumption!Read more
