This is a great sketchbook for use with watercolor! I really wish I could find something in between the standard 5.5×8.5 and 9×12 that seems to be common for watercolor. A 7×10 would be perfect for me. However, this book exceeded expectations! I ordered this at the same time as another with the same dimensions and was surprised at first to see this one is bigger. I realized that Canson measures these pages based on the perforation line. If you were to tear them out the size listed (5.5×8.5) is what they would be after removing them. There’s probably an extra inch or so on the left side where the spiral is. The other sketchbook I got measures the paper literally – meaning the spiral is eating into the listed size so you don’t even that that full size for painting space. Other than being happily surprised about the size, I’m really impressed with the paper. It’s nice and thick and hasn’t buckled with light to medium use of water. Both regular brushes and water brushes work well as do the variety of paints I’ve tried. It’s pretty textured, which I often enjoy, but I do wish they’d offer a hot pressed variety of this book just so I could pick and choose based on what I’m working on. That’s not a flaw with this book, though, and this exceeds all my expectations. I also wish it had more pages, but I’ll settle for buying new ones more often because this is just that good!Read more

I’ve probably filled four or five of these now and love them, perfect for carrying in a small bag. I’ve put quite a bit of water on them, and while the pages do buckle a little with this sort of treatment, nothing bleeds through to the other side. I actually painted on both sides of one sheet without realizing it, and you can’t tell from looking at just one side. Paint and ink pens go on smoothly. Highly recommend. I included pictures of three used books compared to a blank one to show paper buckling, an ink and watercolor image almost filling the page, and an image of the open sketchbook compared to a photograph.Read more

We’re watercoloring novices who purchased this pad to facilitate all the painting we’ve been doing while social distancing, and we’re generally very pleased with it! Here are the highlights: *QUALITY: The paper quality is excellent. The pages are very thick and painting from one sheet don’t smear onto other sheets. In fact, to make the notebook last longer, we’ve found that we can paint on both sides of each sheet after the first side has fully dried. No complaints about the paper itself! *SIZE: We bought the 5.5″x8.5″ pad, and we were a little bit surprised and disappointed by how small the notebook and its pages were. Each page is about the size of my outstretched hand (see photo), which doesn’t leave much space for larger paintings that we might want to hang up. Also, because of the relatively large gap between the notebook’s spiral binding and the perforated edge (see photo), the paper becomes even smaller than 5.5″ (per my own measurements, it’s closer to 5.33″ instead). I can’t complain too much about the size since it does almost match what I ordered, but I do wish I had sat down and measured out the space on a piece of paper beforehand so I knew what I was getting into. Overall, my impression of this notebook is that it’s high-quality, but small, paper. Next time I order watercolor paper, I plan to stick with this brand but get a larger notebook. Happy painting!Read more

I did a color test between this paper (Canson Montval Artist) and my cheapo Canson XL 140 lb watercolor paper — I usually pick up the XL from Wal-Mart, $9.99 for a 9×12 top glued pad of 30 sheets. My results were disappointing. The colors went on and stayed MUCH more vibrant on the cheaper XL paper. After drying overnight, the paint on the XL paper is still obviously brighter and more saturated. Sure, Canson is no Arches, but for practice work, save your money on this Montval crap and just get the Canson XL 140 lb watercolor paper.Read more

This is good paper for practice. Will not take a lot of water before it starts to pill. Obviously, Watercolor paper should be able to handle a ton of water and paint. So when I purchase a new brand or type of paper, no matter what the cost, I expect it to be able to hold and take on lots of water. I won’t purchase this brand again. It’s not the worst and it’s far from the best.Read more

For low budget paper this was very good. It takes, pencil, ink, marker etc really well. Also it was thick enough to not bleed through to the other side. The only problem I had was that it warped when I used it with watercolors. Which was to be expected while still in the book form with no way to control that. If you take the paper out and tape it to a proper work surface it will be fine. I will definitely buy this again.Read more

Even as a beginner, I wouldn’t start with this paper because all it does is discouragingly ruin your efforts. It’s cold press paper but it’s still fairly smooth, and water just sits on the surface sloshing around. You’ll end up with indistinct blobs that neither blend well nor is well defined.Read more

Ok, it buckles a lot just using out of the book, Good for beginners. I’m going to try again taping it down to see if any better. They taped it shut during delivery which left tape markers.Read more

Watercolor paper is so tough to choose for me. With brands being so different it’s almost become a personal style preference on which paper to use. Not many reputable companies make portable affordable options like this. It’s a great value so I’m not worried about “wasting my paper” and it’s portable enough to grab-n-paint so that I can keep myself motivated to paint without having to pull out my grand watercolor set-up and make a huge mess while doing so. It’s not Arches, there is a limit to how many layers you can do before it starts to get finicky with you – but it’s also not some cheap paper that will just wrinkle up as soon as you put a decent wash on it. It takes pen ink very nicely and the paint color remains nice once dry. If you’re not planning a project with 10+ layer effects, or plan to use it as a practice sketchbook then this is my go-to paper for value and consistency. I also love that spiral sketchbooks lay flat, and I totally use the backs of the paper for color testing or thumbnailing.Read more

Veremos. Regreso después para poner mi dictamen final.Read more

This is really good quality paper. Colours are absorbed so nicely and reliably; nothing leaks to neighbouring colours if you don’t intend to blend them. Both wet and dry techniques work just like they should, no surprises. Highly recommend this paper! It’s a pure pleasure to use it for my watercolour sketches (I had a few other brands before and this one is the best!).Read more

The media could not be loaded. Read more
