We have well water that tastes great, but has a lot of lime/calcuim. CLR works great to dissolve calcium build up from plumbing fixtures and rust or calcium build up in the toilet bowl. For toilets, we just dump a cup or two into the bowl, pouring it along the rim to soak as much as possible. It fizzes and breaks up any rust or calcium. If we’ve gone a while between treatments, we’ll leave it in overnight and go in a couple times with a toilet brush to agitate it and re-wet the rim and bowl. A light brushing removes any remaining deposits with ease. For shower heads, it’s best if you remove them and soak them in a plastic or glass bowl. We place the head face down in the bowl and pour the CLR into the pipe fittingvto thoroughly soak the inside and clean any screens or diffusers. Fill the bowl enough to ensure saturation of the jets. Usually 15 minutes will do it, you can lift it and watch how the liquid flows out to confirm it’s clean. You should see nice, even individual streams as the head drains when you lift it. If it dribbles or some jets are still clogged, just soak longer. We have oil rubbed bronze fixtures and the solution has not affected the finish at all. If you can’t or want to remove the shower head, you can put some in a zip loc bag and tie it over the head in place. This works best for routine maintenance where it’s not super clogged. You can do the same on sink faucets, etc. to keep the aerator clean and water flowing smoothly. Be sure to open any windows/doors and use fans to ventilate, this can harm your eyes and lungs. Rinse the whole shower well after this kind of treatment as it can break down grout over time. If possible, removing the shower head and soaking it outside is really the safest and right way to do it *NOTE: Be very careful when turning on the fixtures after treatment, especially if you used the ziplock bag method. This is an acidic solution that can burn your eyes and lungs and any remaining product inside the fixture will be sprayed out on first use. I have a rainshower head that always surprises me how much liquid can be inside it when turned off, and more comes out depending upon the angle you hold it at, this means you might have baffles that can hold CLR and disperse it when you turn the water on, even if you think it’s empty. I’ve gotten some on my skin and washed it off promptly with no issues, but it could burn those with fair or soft skin if left on for any amount of time. I would imagine it would injure your eyes instantly. Be sure to rinse the fixture well before use and wash any residue off of sinks, tile or grout to prevent damage or staining. This is a great product but you have to be careful; wear gloves, eye protection and do not let fumes build up or inhale them. Keep kids and pets out of the treatment area to avoid any accidents.Read more

I live in Las Vegas where the water is considered ‘hard’. Faucets and shower heads tend to get clogged within 2 years, unless the home uses a water softener system – which my house does not have. I poured the CLR into a glass bowl and then soaked my clogged shower head in it for 30 minutes. The shower head is 100% back to normal. I put a cup of CLR into the dishwasher and another cup into the washing machine and ran both through a normal wash cycle. The inside of both look sparkling clean. OMG, this CLR stuff really does work. I’m shocked that a product actually does what it’s advertised to do.Read more

I have used this product for years to descale shower heads and faucet strainers and generally buy a smaller size. Many years ago before the internet I used this product to descale a 40 gallon hot water heater. There are many YouTube videos out now that talk about using this product for that application. If you are considering using this product be advised that if you visit the manufacturers website they will tell you not to use it to descale a hot water heater. They state that it will permanently bind to the heater. I personally don’t see how that is possible but be forwarned. AO Smith at one time sold a product call UN-LIME for the purpose of descaling a hot water heater but no longer make it. However there are other products currently available for the same purpose some of which can be bought on Amazon. RYDLYME DESCALER is available on Amazon and ScaleBrake can be found at a local Grainger store. There may be other products that I am not aware of. (Post product use research) In any event I bought 3 gallons to use on my 50 gallon hot water heater. The water was getting cold too quickly (12 year old heater) so I figured it was either a scale problem or a dip tube problem or both. I descaled and changed the dip tube but the dip tube turned out not to be damaged but was replaced anyway. The descaling seems to do the trick. If you use this product you will have about two weeks of foaming coming out of the hot water lines. Looks like soap bubbles and about one month of a smell similar to a spa with treated water (chemical smell). I will not go into the details on how to do the cleaning since there are many YouTubes that cover that. Just wanted to let you know of the foaming and smell and the time it takes to go away. I flushed the product out of the tank for 2 hours and still had those issues. In the future I may try one of the other products made for this application. I had not researched well enough before I used this product since I had used it in the past and it worked and I was already aware of the foaming and smell which is also discussed in videos.Read more

Tried everything from shortening the chain, replacing the fill valve (twice) and testing the water pressure. Finally called Toto techs who recommended CLR. First, close the valve to the wall and flush. Empty the bowl as much as possible (doesn’t need to be totally empty). Use the ENTIRE GALLON: Pour 1/2 into the overflow tube (inside the tank). Pour the other 1/2 into the bowl. As instructed by Toto, let it sit for 24 hours. Calcium and mineral deposits came off in huge chunks. Flushed 24 hours later. Toto went from a frustrating 7-second flush to a 1-second power flush. Whooosh! CLR got rid of 99% of calcium/mineral deposits. Toto works good as new.Read more

we have used clr for a couple of decades because it works. when something like this works so well no need to make changes, not even the label has changed in all these years. an excellent product! depending on how thick the layers of build up are it can take a couple of uses. but after you have all those years of build up removed, simple annual or biannual single treatments will keep stuff as good as new.Read more

Works like a charm. The people we purchased our home from are slobs. Our home is on well and septic so it was disappointing to see the amount of scum buildup on our showers our tubs and our toilets. A couple of sprays with this product every few months and the first year of living here help remove all of the scale off of the side areas and now a standard cleaner works well to maintain a nice shiny gloss on our tilesRead more
