No idea what you’re doing? Not sure if you’re going to stick with the hobby? Got one of those “Learn-How-To-Art-in-30-Days” books? This is the beginner’s kit you want. It’s cheap, but that doesn’t mean the quality is low. This isn’t a set of professional artists tools (though I’m sure a pro would say, “yeah, it could suffice” in a dismissive tone) – but neither is it one of those cheapo plasticky art sets your weird aunt got you for your birthday when you were 5. Everything is perfectly adequate and does what it’s supposed to do; you’ve got all your basic supplies: pencils, charcoals, erasers, even a sharpener! This will probably cover 80% of the stuff you’ll need to take that course at your the local library or community college. Are there better tools out there? Can you find a higher quality kit? Probably. But you don’t need those until you’ve gotten some practice in, and besides, this costs $7. That other kit comes with a wooden pencil box to hold everything? You’re not shopping for a box, you’re shopping for art supplies! Besides, this comes with a functional plastic tray to hold everything; you can save the display lid and put some tape on it to hold everything together. You can go through three sets of these for the same price as some other beginner’s kits out there. And if you’re thinking of buying this kit, you’re probably still at the beginning of your new art habit, so get 3 of these, make some bad art, make some decent art, and then go back and get that fancier-looking, more expensive kit and use that to make some good art.Read more

I ordered this as a gift for my nephew, a beginner artist. The packing arrived undamaged and intact, EXCEPT one sepia and one charcoal stick—broken. The tortillon was completely smashed in on one end. I was going return it for a refund and reorder a replacement; however, they were out of stock with no restock date. I ended up keeping this; it is exactly what I wanted for him and I couldn’t find anything comparable. Disappointing….Read more

My 10yr old wanted to start sketching by looking at you tube videos and ordered this kit. He is quite pleased with it and since he is beginner he could still get much better results with this within few minutes of trial with shading skills. Will recommend this product. Attached his first sketch attempt with this kit. Read other reviews if you are expert in sketching to get opinion of experienced artist.Read more

This is a great combination for a Beginner … That’s me! The pencils are a good sample of one’s needed for sketching. The charcoal stocks and pencils offer a different medium that works well in combo with grafite pencils. It would have been great if they had packaged it in a case rather than over the top packaging.Read more

4.5 stars. I took off 1/2 star because one of my charcoal sticks was missing a corner. Made the “Birth of Venus” pic within 30 min using all the supplies in the package. PROS: Presentation & Packaging Under $10 on Amazon, closer to $20 in art stores Middle range of pencils Variety of charcoal pencils Decent set of charcoal sticks Awesome erasers CONS: only 1 of 4 charcoal sticks is soft Sharpener will probably dull after 1-2 months As a professional artist who has used supplies from low end to high end, I can say this is well worth its price for under $10. It’s best for beginners and students who want to try out a range of pencils for less than the price of fast food. Pencils range from 2B to 2H and feel like higher end ones. They sharpen well. Silver and black make them look snazzy. These rival Staedtler’s blue pencils in application. You’d be paying at least $1 a piece. Charcoal sticks are decent. I would’ve liked a soft version of the brown. They are harder to apply and smudge easily. Charcoal pencils are good and true to their labels. They apply nicely and sharp. Good for those who don’t wanna dirty their hands. 2-hole Sharpener seems decent, but I can see it going dull after 1-2 months of use. Better than the Crayola bonus sharpeners. Not as smooth to use like my Staedtler one. Not keen on having to stand over a trash can, but it does what it’s made for. The blending stump is a great size, probably costing $2 in an art store. It’s handy that it’s been pre-sharpened at a steeper angle. It picks up colour easily, but I really work it to get it to blend. The erasers are the best thing for me in this package! The white eraser is the softest I’ve ever used and picks up everything I draw. The kneaded eraser works just as well too! Neither damages my paper. They’re worth $1 and $2. I recommend this to all beginners and anyone who is curious about drawing supplies but doesn’t wanna spend over $10. Good for students, but get yourself a pencil case. Definitely better than Artists Loft. This AmazonBasics set is truly the complete package. Would be an excellent gift for budding artists. Plus, they’ll think you spent a lot more than $10!Read more
