I initially decided to purchase a portable vacuum so i could easily reach a ceiling fan in my home. This was rated very high and after using it, I’ve decided I’m happy with it. The good: This is one of the lighter vacs available. It’s ergonomically designed and packs away nicely. It’s easy to clean, just press a button to release to nose, slide out the filter and dump the dirt “cup” into a garbage. The front also has a nozzle that flips into place for harder to reach places or to focus your suction better. I like this feature, as it does away with a loose attachment that needs to be retrieved or stored somewhere (just be careful with it, it IS plastic and i could foresee the pivot pins breaking from misuse/age, which would make it just like any other loose attachment) Of note, I specifically WANTED a corded vaccum. I find batteries always die or don’t last long enough or aren’t ready when you need them. Especially when you use them sparingly. A cord gives you full power, when you need it, for as long as you need it. This cord is plenty long without being a nuisance. Suction for this vacuum was decent. This is my first portable vacuum, it’s not as strong as my full size dry/wet vac, but these vacs are more about convenience and it has plenty of suction for hair, crumbs etc…. It also comes with a flexible hose attachment (about 2 feet or so), very nice for hard to reach spaces. The bad: The only thing that was a bit of a downer that I found was the location of the air vents. This comes with a handy shoulder strap that allows you to hang it over your shoulder. This is a GREAT idea, since it allows you to stand and vacuum high spaces while using one hand to hold the hose end and having one free hand to manoeuvre what you are vacuuming…however…there is a vent on each side of this vacuum, and I found that the vent that is facing your body gets obstructed by your clothes/body. This prevents up to 50% of the air flow assuming they draw air equally. Although I can’t say for sure, I will assume this is detrimental to the motor and that it could cause premature failure if operated this way.Read more

I got this vacuum because it has the best reviews, but now I’m thinking with over 2,000 reviews, people must have an incentive. Yes, the vacuum is powerful. But so are the vents on either side spitting half the dirt back at you! I’m a children’s therapist, so I got this for my office because I work with a lot of sand, glitter, etc. I know it might sound funny, but I had glitter literally pelting my hand. I put an old cleaning cloth over the vents to catch it, and it literally looked like half the glitter was going right back out in the air. That’s gross to be throwing all that dust right back in my face, and highly ineffective. The return process was very easy, though.Read more

As a college student, I needed a small, compact vacuum to keep my dorm clean. I’ve had this for a couple weeks, but so far no problems. It is surprisingly powerful. I’ve seen other products labeled specifically to clean pet hairs, and I was afraid the vacuum would not be as powerful as I would like. So when I received the vacuum, I tried it out on my bed and it picked up a good amount of dust and hair. The extensions are very useful for increasing the suction area to decrease the suction force. For example, I wanted to use this on my bed sheets to pick up stray hairs, but using it by itself is too powerful. It will suck up the sheets. However, if you use the extension dusting brush the suction area is increased and not in direct contact with the bed sheets, so I can easily use this to quickly clean my sheets. The filter is also easy to clean out. If you don’t want to get your hands dirty, I recommend wearing gloves. The negative about this product is that it can be tiring to hold the vacuum for a long time. But, it’s the sacrifice for being clean. It’d be the same for other devices, and I would imagine that lighter vacuums might be less powerful. PROS: -Small -Powerful -Useful extensions CONS: -A little heavy, can get tiring after holding for a whileRead more

Many years ago, I had an original Royal Dirt Devil. It was a high quality US-made item, with a rotating brush, just like an upright vac, and a generous-sized cloth bag to hold the dirt. This Chinese-made Dirt Devil Scorpion is its slacker grandson. One big problem: noise. This is by far the loudest, shrillest vacuum I’ve ever used. I don’t recommend using it without hearing protection. I’m totally serious. Then there’s the switch. The original had a simple, easily operated tab-style slide switch. The Scorpion’s looks like it should be a rocker switch, but it isn’t. It’s a slide, but without the upright tab the older one had. This one is easy to turn on, but turning it off requires more grip than the flat, slightly ribbed slider provides. That’s a problem, because you’re going to be turning this vacuum cleaner off and on frequently when you’re using it. As other reviewers say, the Scorpion has a surprising amount of suction, way more than most handheld vacs — for about 30 seconds. Then the tiny filter inside the dirt cup gets caked with dirt. The motor carries on with its banshee wail, but with diminishing effect. So you claw at the switch to turn the Scorpion off. You pop off the dirt cup and empty it into the trash can. Then, following the directions, you tap the filter on the side of the trash can, to try to clear the dust clog from it. This gets your hands filthy, and raises a cloud of dust that settles right back onto the surface that you’re trying to clean. It’d be better to take the dust cup and filter outside to dump and clean them, of course. But it’s tough to get much cleaning done when you’re unplugging your vacuum and hauling it out into the weather every half-minute or so. I’m usually pretty careful about researching items like this before ordering, but I totally missed the fact that something similar to the original, bag-equipped Dirt Devil is still available:Dirt Devil Ultra Corded Bagged Handheld Vacuum . I suggest you take a close look at that vacuum before you order this model.Read more

I own a cleaning company but I wanted a small hand vac for only crevices every once in a while and for my own home. The suction was so powerful I was amazed as I have tried other hand vacs and they weren’t anywhere near as sturdy as this one. However when the crevice tool broke off after only a few uses I was disappointed particularly since I cannot seem to find a replacement part and I do not wish to spend another $30 on another while vacuum! I was pleased with the performance but dissatisfied with the durability overall. Bummer.Read more

I just received my order for the Dirt Devil Model number SD20005RED…at least I thought I did. Upon opening the box, I realized, as stated on Amazon, there were “included” parts missing: “Upholstery Tool, Dirt Devil Scorpion Quick Flip Corded Bagless Handheld Vacuum, Sliding Brush, Hose, Sd20005Red, Crevice Tool”. I wondered and then checked the vacuum only to discover the Model number was different, I was sent SD30025B. Amazon did state, “design might vary”,NOT Model and Parts Might Vary. As a consumer. and a long time customer of Amazon, can it be explained why the model you show could not be sent. That’s like false advertising in my book! I am disappointed, I was interested in the parts that were missing, not looking for a stair tool!Read more

Crazy powerful for its size. You’ll never find this kind of power in a battery powered unit. Sure its got a bulky annoying cord, but you’ll never have to spend money for a battery replacement or worry about charging it. Just slap it away and its as good to use next time as it just was. You’ll save yourself a lot of headaches in the future. This trend toward lithium ion everything is just another way to rip us off. Get more corded appliances. You won’t regret it.Read more
