THE HISTORY OF DUCK TAPE
Duct tape has adhered itself so well to American culture that it’s become much more than a roll of tape. It’s an enduring symbol of all in this world that is functional.

So how did this sticky wonder come about? It was World War II and there was a need for a strong, flexible, durable, waterproof tape that could seal canisters, repair cracked windows, repair trucks, and help the war effort in general. Permacell, a division of the Johnson and Johnson Company, stepped up to this challenge. Using medical tape as a base, they applied two new technologies. Polycoat adhesives gave the tape its unshakable stick and polyethylene coating allowed them to laminate the tape to a cloth backing, making it extremely strong and flexible. The resulting tape was nicknamed “Duck Tape” for its ability to repel water, while ripping easily into strips for fast convenient use.

After the war the tape was put to the more civilian use of holding ducts together. So the product changed from a nameless army green tape to the familiar gray duct tape.

Thirty years later, Jack Kahl, former CEO of Manco, Inc., changed the name of the product to Duck Tape and put ‘Manco T. Duck’ on the Duck Tape logo, giving personality to a commodity product. Manco, Inc. also began to shrink-wrap and label the product, making it easier to stack for retailers, and easier to distinguish different grades for customers.

Now, over 50 years after its invention, Duck tape is sold in more than 20 colors and is touted by its followers for having a nearly endless amount of uses. What will happen to Duck Tape? What advancements in Duck Tape technology will be made? Only time will tell.

PREPARING SURFACES TO USE DUCK TAPE
When using Duck Tape, whether the traditional silver or one of the rainbow of Duck color tapes, all surfaces should be clean and free of dust or dirt before placing any tape on them. You will want to dust the surface and then wipe the area down with rubbing alcohol. However, rubbing alcohol can dull certain surfaces, so try it on a small, inconspicuous area before applying on a large scale.

I used this to make a firetruck costume out of cardboard boxes. This was perfect! Paired with black and white rolls used, it made the perfect costume that impressed many. None of the duct tape came loose, even at the ends or corners.Read more

I don’t think it’s supposed to be sheer or easy to remove as its duck tape. It was a sturdy duck tape. Sturdy and adhered well for my use. I also used to seal some boxes. It did the job well. The color was also a nice, bright red.Read more

As a show promoter and artist manager, I use a lot of tape everyday. I recently purchased the Duck Brand Duct Tape instead of my usual store brand. I was pleasantly surprised in how much better this tape is. It tears easily so you are not wasting several inches each time you cut off a strip. This alone justifies any minor cost difference. But the biggest benefit I found was that tape continues to stick even in less than pristine locations. I use tape to mark locations on stage and the edges of risers and steps. The Duck Brand tape stayed in place despite the stage floor having significant dirt and dust on it, even after sweeping. This not only saves me precious time, but adds to the safety of our show. I am definitely sold on this brand.Read more

We recycled Amazon boxes to mail Christmas gifts this year. I used this red duct tape down the center seam, flanked by cute narrow washi tape & then sealed it all up right & tight (USPS Compliant) with the Scotch Tear by Hand Packaging tape. Also used red and green stamp pads to imprint pretty snowy forest scenes around the bottom edges of the boxes. They looked pretty festive & we were able to mail them out with no problems. The leftover red duct tape I’ll use with a sharpie to make easy labels for closet/pantry storage. I recommend this product!Read more

I bought this to “repair” the seats on a classic Rover which are red leather. The red tape doesn’t look so bad as traditional black or silver would do and I can live with that until I get the car retrimmed properly. The tape was way cheaper than a whole new leather interior, so bargain in that sense, but I was a little surprised there was not a lot of tape on the roll…Read more

This “cherry” red tape looked a little dark on my screens (several devices). The roll I received is primary red, just what I wanted. It is a little opaque, so when put over a white surface it is bright and when on a dark surface it is a slightly darkened shade. We love it. I hope that color information helps someone. I used it to make a tri fold dry erase board which can be made with any color or pattern of duct tape (on the web, Suzanne Shares). Perfect if you need to setup low budget/personal presentations ahead and take them with you. Homeschool groups, hobby clubs, church classes . . . . The other pieces come with enough to make two, so with this tape price I am going to end up with two complete projects for under $25!Read more

Bought this red color to match to an old chair our cat was tearing up to serve as a stopgap measure before reupholstering. While it is a little lighter in color than it looks online, the strength of the tape is outstanding and has stood up to pouncing, bouncing, gnawing and clawing. I know that’s not probably what most people are going to use this for, but if you’ve ever been around a rambunctious kitty, you’ll understand that this means the tape is tough as (cat)nails. I was also impressed with the stickiness of the tape as I was sticking it to a foam cushion. I didn’t expect it to hold as well as it has. Overall, will definitely buy this brand again – even if the pun-unciation naming play on “duct tape” makes me cringe a little lolRead more

In my job as a janitorial service manager for a large retail chain, my team and I are tasked with dusting a stores ceiling light fixtures. We use equipment with 20 foot cords to remove the dust, and cover everything below with plastic tarps to protect the merchandise from the debris fallout. The cords, along with the fallout, and the tarps, can create a hazardous environment. To ensure safety, we tape down all our tarps and cords with Duck Brand Duct Tape, in RED. The RED color is highly visible which helps my crew avoid tripping and falling, and the strong adhesive that Duck Brand uses always keeps the tape locked in place, regardless of what its sticking to. Quite frankly, securing these items with Duck Brand Duct Tape helps us promote a safe work environment and is an essential part of our routine that we can always rely on.Read more

I have so many Christmas decorations that it’s obscene! I could decorate my neighbors houses lol I bought this tape to put on the Christmas boxes to identify them instantly. This way when I send someone to get the boxes I want, they know to look for the red tape. Easy peasyRead more
