I’ve learned in the past from my professional work that my fingerprints are exceptionally shallow and difficult for automated professional systems to process. Consequently, I had never before even tried retail fingerprint reading technology, as I figured it would not work reliably for me. (And in case you’re wondering, no, I have not even tried the fingerprint reader on my smartphone.) Thus, I was pleased that this 64GB encrypted thumb drive with a fingerprint reader actually worked, to some degree, with my fingers. In fact, I considered giving it four stars instead of three, but decided it was too erratic to merit the enthusiasm implicit in a four-star rating. If I were allowed fractional star ratings, I’d give this product 3.5 stars. The instruction booklet seems to imply that you can register only one fingerprint with the Administrator account, but I succeeded in registering four (two fingers on both hands) on my unit. And if your computer setup is anything like my crowded computer desk, registering multiple fingers on both hands is a must. The USB ports on my three PCs are in crowded spaces and at various orientations. On any given machine, I’m lucky even to have an available port with enough surrounding free space to angle one of my hands and one of my fingers into the right position for a fingerprint read. Thus, having multiple choices (of hands, of fingers) is a must. In my tests, the fingerprint reader on this thumb drive failed about half the time. The instruction booklet is not clear on this, but it seems that the unit eventually locks out any further attempts if, after some amount of time (a minute?), it hasn’t verified your fingerprint. At that point, I would unmount the unit and then re-insert it in the USB port to try again. Eventually, I would usually get it to recognize one of my fingers, but if not, one can fall back to using the Administrator password. In some cases, one of my machines would simply fail to recognize this device when I plugged it into a USB port. If that happened, I just unplugged the device and tried again. I also observed cases where a machine recognized the thumb drive, but then would unrecognize it spontaneously a few minutes later. As I said, this thumb drive is erratic. In addition, I tried to unlock the thumb drive using a finger that I had not registered, but did not succeed in doing so—which is good, of course. I tested the copying speed of this thumb drive on my laptop using a USB 3.0 port. It was about the same on the public and encrypted sectors: 16.8 megabytes/sec, which seems respectable.Read more

PROS: Built-in fingerprint reader. No software required, built in app comes with it, also windows will recognize and you can use windows encryption features or whichever OS you are using. Super easy to use. You have the option of using or not using encryption. Solid metal, heavy duty body. Nice sleek design, if you are buying it for the looks. Operates cool for long time operations. It works. CONS!: -Easy hack-thru software encryption, I can easily hack thru the software encryption, literally almost no security (I am not a regular home users) -Doesn’t have 256-bit AES hardware encryption. -Slow reading and writing speed. -Application comes built in has no certificates, unknown built 3rd party app, so you don’t know if they are stealing your data. -USB 3.0 only but uses a low end controller looks like, because it does bottleneck speeds. -Unknown brand, no tech support, no warranty information whatsoever. -Controller is not encrypted, software encryption only. -No technical sheet can be found online, what controller does it use? what protocols or certifications for security does it have???? nothing! -Company website worthless, some shady product. I do not suggest trusting this product to store any important data or document or information.Read more

This USB 3.0 thumb drive has a secure drive partition that can supposedly be accessed using fingerprint identification technology or password. The password works fine. I have used a similar drive by another company, and I had no problem setting up or using my fingerprint to access the secure portion of the drive. When you connect this USB drive, you click on the “CD drive” (which is a confusing title) to access the user manual and the fingerprint verification app. You first set up the password and then follow the directions to input your fingerprint under the administration profile. You can add up to six people (the administrator and five users). To access the secure part of the drive, you don’t just put your fingerprint on the pad. Instead, you need to click on the fingerprint app. After inputting my fingerprint, I disconnected the USB drive and reconnected it to test that it worked. I tried to input my fingerprint about 15 times and it “failed” each time. After using the password, I tried putting in a new fingerprint for that profile using a different finger. When tested, it still failed every single time. Unfortunately, the maximum amount that you can put as a public drive is 57.1 GB free space (with 0.58 GB the minimum left in the secure area. The rest of the gigabytes are used for the software and such). Since the fingerprint technology doesn’t work, I would’ve preferred a way to remove this function so that more of the space was free for use. When transferring videos to the drive, you need to make sure to put it in the proper drive (public or secure) and not the CD drive or it tells you that there is not room. It’s reasonably quick to transfer files, though apparently you need to reformat the drive if you wish to transfer single, multi-gigabyte files.Read more

Dynon Metrics BulletDrive is billed as a device that unlocks with your fingerprint. I probably wasted an hour trying to set up and remove finger prints in an attempt to make the reader work. It simply refuses to read my finger print. If you’re looking for a secure device USB flash drive that works with your fingerprint, look for another product. This one is a stinker.Read more
