I have used hill science diet in my older yorkie since she was a pup. So about 4yrs now. We recently got a new puppy and started him on this science diet, while my other dog is on the adult food. I had brought both of them new dry dog food at the same time and they have both started not wanting to eat it. Especially the new puppy. Eventually they would get hungry and eat and both of them would get sick and puke it up. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but it persisted and continued. The only thing I could think of was their food, as they have only been in the house and car. Took them to the vet, and the puppy got anti nausea meds and extra fluids. I know the latest recall is only on wet dog food, but it is too concerning to me to continue them on this, with both not liking the food and throwing up. I will update my review after they both have stabilized and been on new dog food to see if that was why. Please be careful, especially if you have a tiny 3pd pup like I do. **Update** We did get rid of both bags of dog food at the time this happened. My puppy did in fact have other issues and health problems associated with liver shunts. After a few surgeries and his life hanging in the balance he survived and is doing well. He definitely has long term issues that added to his issues eating. My other yorkie did not have any of those issues and why I was skeptical of their food at the time. Later on she developed pancreatitis and also almost lost her. Both are doing well now, and both have to have different prescription diet food. We stuck with Science Diet and haven’t had any issues since, but again we no longer get their food from Amazon, but at the vet clinic with a prescription. My guess is it could have been a bad batch we recieved whether from science diet themselves or Amazon receiving a fluke of fake counterfeit product. I honestly don’t know. I have updated my rating as science diet is typical a good brand but just be mindful and aware, especially online.Read more

The first small bag of this my 4 month old puppy seemed fine. He’d only throw up if he scarfed his food, but a slow feeder/watering it down fixed that. The second time I ordered, I got the larger bag. He started to throw up almost every time he ate this food. I stopped feeding it to him and have been making him food with rice, lean meat, and peas and carrots. I also started him on a probiotic because I was worried he might just have a sensitive stomach. I recently wanted to start mixing kibble back in to make sure he gets all of his vitamins as he grows. I mixed in just a small amount two times and both times he ended up throwing up later. It’s official, the large back of this product is bad. It’s unfortunate that my puppy had to get so sick many times and that I have to throw away half of a large bag. I will not buy the product again.Read more

My other dog ate Science Diet his whole life. When he was five, after pressing for a dental cleaning vets would look at his teeth and say “wow! No cleaning! What do you feed him?” He lived to be an old dog until a genetic defect caused his passing. After a while, I now am pleased to have a new puppy to keep me company. I started him on Science Diet for puppies. He loves this food and keeps getting bigger fast! He is lean and has tons of energy. He will be twice the size of mom and dad. I would highly recommend this for anyone who wants their dog to live a long healthy life.Read more

This food made my maltipoos eyes constantly tear and left very dark red tear stains under each eye. After reading the ingredients I realized it’s completely loaded with wheat, barley, and other horrible ingredients. I switched my dog back to taste of the wild and immediately the stains started to disappear. This food is not a high quality option for dogs it is a “science” marketing scheme, just read the ingredients for yourself.Read more

This was the first dog food we purchased for a new puppy solely because it was what the breeder used. We should have read the ingredients beforehand. This dog food is like the Nutraloaf served to prisoners. There is much more garbage and filler in this food compared to other brands. On the bright side, I did enjoy the easy seal packaging which was more like velcro than a ziplock. It was easy to open and close securely. That seems to be all this dog food has going for it. If you want your dog to feel like they are serving hard time in the penitentiary, this is the dog food for you. Otherwise, do your dog a favor and look around at other dog foods and read the ingredients before purchasing.Read more

I’ve got a relatively picky 10 lb toy poodle/coton de tulear mix who’s 10 years old. I fed her royal canin puppy food and planned to stick with it but it was very frustrating to get my dog to eat. Now she’s not necessarily crazy about this food but she eats it! And she chews it! My favorite part is that her poops come out firmer than they used to. I use a potty pad tray and I don’t have to worry about any getting on the tray anymore! I also like the Velcro type closure on the bag!Read more

The kibble is extremely small and my dog choked on it several times. I noticed after 2 months of using my dogs fur began to look extremely dry. I took my dog to the vet and he was diagnosed with dry skin and his vet advised me to change his food. This food maybe great for another dog but just not good for my dog.Read more

I’ll start off by saying that the Hill’s formula doesn’t smell as bad as other kibble brands but it does feel oilier. I also really like the velcro closure on the bag – very convenient way to open/close the bag and keep the food fresh. That being said, I’ve tried many different brands as I wanted to find a food that my puppy got excited about and really liked (she never eats as soon as I put her bowl down and usually picks at it for an hour or so before it’s done – just not food motivated). Sadly it was no different for this Hill’s formula. When on her previous food, Purina Pro Plan (PPP) for small breeds, my puppy always reliably pooped 2-3x a day, once in the morning, once in the evening, and sometimes in the afternoon. After switching to Hill’s – slowly and by the book – she poops way more and in the middle of the night when she didn’t before… So frustrating when I’m trying to potty train her! After doing some reading, I found the Hill’s kibble contains less calories than the PPP (397 vs 482) so you have to feed more of it (based on feeding guidelines), which will result in more poop.. Also for a dog who isn’t very food motivated, getting her to eat treats is hard enough, let alone her kibble..feeding her a lesser amount while still meeting her caloric requirements, especially because she’s very active, without having to hand feed and coax her is much less of a headache for me. Her coat was much softer before and I got a bigger bag for a similar price, so I will be switching back to PPP.Read more

This food is great! My puppy was previously on Orijen puppy food, which is very expensive, and her poop smelled terrible and was often quite soft. This kibble seems to have relieved those issues and is also about half the size of the Orijen kibble! Much easier for my little Pom to chew!Read more

I have a 3 month old Chorkie and she LOVES this kibble. She was eating Royal Canin before but the price was significantly higher than most kibble brands out there. My vet recommended to try this one and I’m so thankful for it. First bowl I served my puppy she ate it all in ONE sitting. With none of the old kibble mixed in.Read more

Read more

Since Science Diet changed the packaging, my puppy won’t eat it anymore. The kibble is a different shape (smaller and thicker than the original flat and round kibble) and I don’t think he was able to chew it while he is teething and/or he is just bored with this food in general. Too bad as his vet highly recommend this food for him.Read more
