I bought this Lyric Fruit & Nut product not for birds, but for the squirrels that live in the huge oak trees in our backyard. Most of these type of products consist of primarily tiny seeds for birds, but squirrels prefer larger size pieces, such as the bug chunks of dried fruit and nuts that make up the majority of this one. I was surprised at how many whole almonds and cashews are present in this blend. This looks more similar to a “trail mix” that humans would eat, than to a bag of “bird seed”. I know I am in a small minority of people who, instead of trying to attract and feed birds while keeping the squirrels from stealing the food… are actually trying to feed the squirrels and keep the birds from stealing all the food. That being said, the Blue Jays and Wood Peckers also love this stuff. It’s fun to watch the squirrels compete with the birds when I put this fruit & nut & seed mix out in the little squirrel feeder. At first the squirrels are defensive and chase the birds away, but the Blue Jays are so persistent that eventually the squirrels just accept them as dinner guests, and we will often see a squirrel and a Blue Jay standing within two feet of each other, begrudgingly tolerating each other, as they dig into this delicious mix together. A few days ago, I finally got one of our squirrels to take a piece of food right out of my hand. I don’t think the birds are going to do that any time soon.Read more

Purchased two 20lb bags and two 5lb bags all within a matter of weeks due repetitive nor’easters. The small bags contain more broken nuts then 20lb bags. Cannot explain if smaller bags contain broken pieces due to processing or crushing under warehouse stocking weight. This winter brought large quantity of birds to feeders. Think of the scene from “Birds” at the height of full blown blizzards. Shoveling area for my dogs every hour and tossing seeds and nuts. Dozens of birds I have never seen before. The smaller birds know and trust my filling feeders, they have a distinctitive chirp or song. There are a few chickadees I can almost touch while filling feeders because they perch and sing within three feet. Bigger birds, blue jays, orioles, cowbirds, and starlings scream from surrounding trees until I leave. I toss and fill feeders enabling squirrels feeding space with all varieties of birds. Whiteout to humans, but feeding frenzy for wildlife. High protein nuts was first choice for all birds and use mixed seeds expanding feeding areas. Four photos, two from 20lb & two from 5lb broken bits. Robins, juncos, titmouse, and finches went for small seeds and nut bits tossed under our table. Our home is near wildlife sanctuaries and this winter a silver fox walked to our yard. 20lb bag has value if you care about quality. I only feed birds late fall through early spring.Read more

Let me start by saying, this product has been a wonderful product, we’ve ordered it several times. BUT, this specific review is about a recent delivery and it landed on our front porch later than we were told it would and full of maggots. We had to put it all in the recycling bin and the ravens and squirrels aren’t one bit happy about it and neither are we.Read more

Original Review: The birds like it, so do the squirrels, possums and raccoons. It has some small black oil sunflower seed, but unlike most seed and nut blends, it’s the minority. It is a very good blend w/some seeds, some fruit, and lots of nuts. Although many of the nuts are whole, my birds have no problem, they just take it and peck the nut into pieces. If you were worried, you can easily break the nuts up with your fingers or a hammer. It does have corn, but the corn is kind of smashed into little wafers. All the birds love this seed mix. I would have given it a higher rating, but the cost is high and worse when I got near the bottom of the bag the seed was all stuck together in mold, so I had to throw a lot out. The manufacturer has contacted me to issue a refund, and if that pans out I will revise my review. Unfortunately the price has gone up $5 in 5 months, but with the amount of nuts and the blend itself it is still cheaper than other brands I’ve looked at, because the others are mostly sunflower seed. UPDATE: Manufacturer made good on guarantee and issued a refund. I have purchased an additional bag, and though it was higher in cost, as stated previously, you get more for the money than other brands, and lots more nuts. UPDATE 11/2018: I have used this product for years and have been seeing a change in the formula, and it’s not for the good. Originally their product only had shelled sunflower seed, the fruit and the nuts, and some corn. On their website that’s what they list as ingredients. However, I started notice more and more black oil sunflower seed in shells, AND a lot more of the pressed corn. They claim no waste and no fillers, but there is definitely waste from the shell on sunflower seed, which leaves a mess, and corn is definitely a filler. The birds do not eat the corn. They have changed their formulation from their website, as well as the Amazon site. The new package lists: shelled peanuts, CORN, sunflower kernels, BLACK OIL SUNFLOWER, almonds, pecans, pistachios, cashews, shelled pumpkin seeds, dried cherries, dried cranberries, and raisins. So the 2nd ingredient is corn and the 4th is black oil seed in shell. Of course they didn’t lower the price even though they lowered the quality. With unshelled seeds and corn, it makes a mess on the deck, so I can no longer use it there. I am beginning my search for another mix. Disappointing.Read more
