Very nice packaging along with the good looking aluminum casing it gave one a sense of quality. It hooked up to my computer and was instantly recognized with no initialization needed thus working right out of the box. I did, however, reformat it to NTFS vs F32 but don’t do that if you are going to use it on multiple OS devices. I uploaded my 124Gb photography files for portable backup from a 1TB internal SSD and it took took 45 minutes so not to bad. The build is quite sturdy but was a little heavier an and thicker that I would have thought, but then again it is an HDD. Unlike a female standard USB input this had a mini SATA input which surprised me meaning the cord is somewhat proprietary but easily found on Amazon. Over all it is a very nice unit with a great three year warranty, it should work fine for backup and inexpensive portability.Read more

+ The write speed of this mechanical hard drive is 75mb/s, which can be pretty underwhelming when compared to the blazing fast speeds of SSDs. But because this is a mechanical hard drive, it also does not experience the drastic slow down after sustained writing. I have portable SSDs in the 512gb range and while they can initially deliver 300mb/s+ of speed, at some point usually a few minutes in the speed will throttle down to 20mb/s. This hard drive will maintain high write speeds from empty to full. It’s not a good external drive if you want to install software and games on it, but it is a good external drive if you want to write large sized files + My windows PC recognized it immediately + Power and data in single cord: no external power supply needed. Uses the standard portable hard disk “micro B” cable, does not use type C + 465gb usable + exfat preformatted + copying a 350gb file, speeds started at 75mb/s then linearly decreased to 55mb/s by the end. Compared to 512gb micro SD cards: slightly less expensive, MUCH larger, same read speeds, faster write speed Compared to 512gb portable SSD: less expensive, slightly larger, much slower read speeds, slower write speeds for small transfers but faster average write speeds for large transfersRead more

This is a really nice solid hard drive. It feels great in the hand and the aluminum casing seems like it would stand up to all kinds of abuse. At the current price of less than $40, it is a great way to get a little extra storage, use it as a time machine backup for your Mac, or as a place to store your photos. It is a legitimate question whether you actually want a hard drive when flash storage may be slightly cheaper and faster but there are things that you need hard drives for still and I’ll assume if you are buying this then you have already made that decision. I’m reviewing this based on the fact that it is a great hard drive that is compact enough to be carried in your bag without taking up too much room. I appreciate that the activity light on the drive is very subtle and won’t be a distraction every time you access a file. Overall happy with the “MEGAZ DIGITAL 500GB Portable External Hard Drive, HDD USB 3.0 Compatible for PC, Mac, Laptop, Chromebook, Grey”.Read more

I hooked it up to one of the blue USB ports on my Windows 10 PC and it was automatically detected. The drive showed up in My Computer and was ready to use within a few seconds of plugging it in. I copied about 20 GB of files to the drive and saw a tp transfer speed of 30.2 MB/s I don’t know what the average was for the whole 20 GB, but it seemed to sit around 28-29 MB/s as it worked through copying files from each directory. It would slow to 7-10 MB/s when changing directories, then speed back up. The plastic housings is about 3.5″ x 4.5″ x 0.5″ and came with the USB cable. I’ve been looking for a SSD drive in this size range to take on business trips where I take a lot of pictures and video and need a reliable way to back those up in the field. While this is a 5400 RPM spinning hard drive, I’m hoping it is durable enough to serve this purpose until I can find an SSD based drive to fill this need.Read more

I do a fair amount of creative work on my laptop, and it never had the best storage space. This external hard drive has been a dramatic improvement. It was easy to install, and it didn’t take too long to transfer some of the large files that I had clogging up my laptop. However, I’m a little disappointed that the cord for it does not appear to be universal. I never like having single-use cords strewn all over the house. I suppose this amount of storage could be added for around the same price using a USB Flash drive just as easily. Unfortunately, this external hard drive does not have enough space to run programs or games, so it’s essentially going to be filled with my photos and word processing documents. Suppose I had it to do all over again. In that case, I’d probably go that route or grab a different external drive with the capability to boost my laptop storage and functionality even further.Read more

I don’t really understand the MEGAZ DIGITAL USB 3.0 500GB Portable External Hard Drive. The MEGAZ is slower than flash-based alternatives, but at about $36.60, the 500GB model is not really any cheaper, either. I’ve posted the ATTO speed benchmark results. I mean, it’s a 5400 RPM laptop drive, so the results are about double what you’d get out of a USB 2.0 device. On the plus side, the write speeds don’t suffer from NAND flash’s buffer fill problem. Also, you don’t have to worry about write endurance. The case seems well made, and the 4.5W provided by USB 3.x is enough to keep you from needing a double-headed USB-A cable. If I had to ask why this exists, I’d be hard-pressed to find a good reason. I think your money is better spent on a decent flash-based alternative, but this may be an option if you are one of those rare corner cases (like you want this for NVR use) where write performance and durability is key, then this may work for you.Read more
