I’ve had both the WAX214 and WAX218 for a couple of weeks now to evaluate at home and am very happy. Since I downloaded and installed the new v1.0.3.3 firmware release on June 1, I have not experienced the reboot issue on either unit that others are talking about. I needed an AP that allows me to create multiple SSIDs, create isolated networks, cover a wide area, has the latest WPA3 security, and handle our growing number of connected devices. Plus, while quite technical, I’m not a networking guy, so having an easy setup / configuration is really important to me. The WAX214 and WAX218 fit the bill nicely. I love the sleek, industrial design that makes it easy to add anywhere in the house. I’m not a fan of the included mounting plate, but it’s easy enough to bypass and mount without it. PoE power is a bonus, so using a simple NETGEAR PoE+ switch allows me to run a single cable for both power and data. Ok, now for the configuration. There is a sticker covering the Ethernet port directing me to the configuration only SSID. I saw the WAX214XXXXXX-CONFIG-ONLY (the XXXXXXX is the last 6 numbers of the unit’s MAC address) network pop up in my list of wireless networks (similar for the WAX218). All I had to do is to join that SSID, go to aplogin.net and it prompted me for the rest of the configuration. I had to create a new admin password for the local login, enter a name and passphrase for the new network, and that’s it. Easy. As I said earlier, I’ve had both of these up and running for a few weeks and have not experienced any reboots. I now have better coverage for more devices than my previous WiFi 5 AP, and much better security. I’m very glad I purchased the WAX214 and WAX218. Now I just have to decide which one to give to my sister. Full disclosure: while I am not on the wireless team, I do work for NETGEAR. I did, however, write this review myself after purchasing the WAX214 and WAX218.Read more

Edit: Well, it seems I have to put my foot in my mouth. After a period of time I began experiencing the random reboots that others reviewers mentioned. Now I am past the return window and have to deal with Negear support. Shame. Edit 2: Netgear support has been terrible. They will not offer refunds if you have not bought directly from them. They will only ship out another product. What good does that do me if the defect is in firmware that they acknowledge and have yet to fix.Read more

To give you a quick background. I run my own IT business and have installed 100s of WAPs for clients, so I’m very familiar with product testing and installation. Brand new AX units Wanted to try and hopefully recommend. Typically I use Ubiquiti products but their AX units were on backorder until April/May. Once I received the units look very nice. Plugged them in for 48 hours. The units randomly reboot every 4-7 hours. Double checked settings and POE+ switches. Ubiquiti units (UAP Nano HD) have worked fine for the last two years using the POE+ switches I have (Ubiquiti, Netgear, ZyXel, OHWOAI switches which do not have any issues with other POE+ required devices). New firmware released on 3/11/2021. Figured I would give it a whirl. Not less than 40 minutes later. Boom they rebooted no rhyme or reason. After looking over the manual, I noticed the “baby AX” model, the WAX214, were listed in the same manual. These units came out long before the WAX218 models. Many reviews for the WAX214 showed the same issues I’m experiencing with random reboots. They also point out what I’ve also confirmed for myself that the part numbers listed on the units (not in the manual or any part numbers listed on any sites though) seems to be very similar if not the same as the EnGenius AX WAPs which as you guessed it also have reviews of random reboots. Such a shame. Was excited to get these to give them a whirl. I’ve used many Netgear routers and switches over the years for clients or for myself and have no issues with tech support, but since these are a “brand new” product they should not be rebooting so frequently right out of the box. Since these are still within the 30 days of purchase they are heading back. Will stick with what I know and wait for the backorder of the new Ubiquiti AX units.Read more

Do not buy. They charge you for management tools and the app couldn’t even find the ap. Had to manually type in the IP address of the AP which wasn’t even the one listed in manual. Just stick with ubiquity products. Came back to update post, range is pretty disappointing. Edit again after a month of use, constant crashes and rests of AP. Especially when trying to use company VPN. Stay awayRead more
