I’ve been using this to project books in my classroom and really it’s not great. The software “options” take up way to much space onscreen and are not able to be turned off or minimized. Also, the focus shifts tremendously every time I point to something onscreen and there is a huge lag. Would return it if I hadn’t missed the limited window.Read more

This is a portable camera (more than a scanner) with a black plastic mat to use as a base for scanning documents and books. The actual camera itself is protected in an office lamp setup where the down position makes it into a closed metal bar that is easy to carry. There is a guard from closing completely on the lens. This works with a USB-A cable and can power off 1.0 A, so a direct connection to a computer is possible in use (or a laptop in a library). The mat allows for a uniform processing and it gives clear targets for a straight page photograph. The image processing from jpeg can render either to pdf or docx. I have only used the Latin alphabet, but apparently, it can be used with others. The strongest point of this device is that this is extremely durable and portable unlike some of the bigger fixed scanners. The downside is that it does not have adjustable sizes and it does not have the texture read that some of the larger scanners can preserve as well. There is a slight problem with the camera correctly interpreting glyphs from a dark page background (black background and an ink color that is not white), but otherwise, all the documents I used this on at work scanned and rendered correctly.Read more

I’m pretty disappointed with this document camera. While it plugs directly into my computer, it comes with absolutely no instructions other than the obvious pictorial directions showing you how to plug it in to a USB port. Any fool can do that. But I wanted to use this as a document camera in my classroom, and since it plugs in as a camera, there is no software that allows me to directly project from this to my projector. Instead, I have to go through another program, but I don’t have one that acts easily as a document camera. My previous document camera actually has a button that let’s me toggle between it and my computer screen or a black screen as needed. So this works as a camera, essentially, but the picture quality I’ve been able to attain is simply horrible. When I have tried to use it to insert a picture into a Google Slide presentation, the image looks great in the very small preview size. But I can’t even enlarge it to a full 8 1/2 x 11 without it becoming incredibly pixelated and rendering words unreadable. Is it possible to scan text? Possibly, but there are no instructions to do so, and I found it much easier to just pull out my cell phone and use the camera/scanner in it. The one helpful piece from this camera setup is the black mat which provided a solid background. Honestly, at the beginning of the school year, I don’t have time to hunt down a manual and hope that I can get clearer instructions. So, for now, this is merely a disappointing paperweight.Read more

First and foremost, NetumScan Book & Document Scanner does work. It does do its job at capturing images of text and book pages that are A4 size or smaller at a 1:1 ratio. However, it is limited in its potential. As a genealogist and author of local histories, I have scanned/photographed approximately 50,000+ pages of documents, photographs. And for that, I have either used a high SLR or bed scanner. Finding an overhead scanner/camera that can easily be transported, but is affordable, has always been a pipe dream of mine. And for standard size documents, single pages, this does work at what I would call minimally acceptable standards for 2021. This scanner works well with ambient light. The light in the overhead bar, I assume, is there to minimize shadow from the bar itself. In a household situation, shades open, the scanner/camera performed as it should have in a 1:1 situation. The shortcomings of this unit are that you have a piece of equipment that performs to its price point. This isn’t going to replace your flatbed scanner or a high-end SLR. Another shortcoming is that I found its operational program feedback is less than refined. It feels more like a Windows 3.1 interface, and the way it interacts with your selections has a “brittle” sense to it. (Note: I was running this on a new Alienware computer, so it wasn’t on an older machine.) The pixel limitation works against good enlargements – so this functions best at a 1:1 ratio. One drawback that every one of these arm scanners has is that the base is very small. So if the USB cord moves, it can easily twist the unit. For directions and set up, you need to visit the manufactures site. I had numerous problems downloading and activating the software – Windows10 complained about the security certificate and kept shutting the process down. And the download on our home network took a very long time. It is portable, but I do wish they had included a case for the unit, its mat, and the cords. Your needs may be different, but in the 30 years I have been working with documents and images, my expectations are higher. While it does work in some situations, for me, they just weren’t fully met, hence the three-star review.Read more
