I had ordered MANY of these units over the past several years – at the time, they had SMALLER beads inside that changed from blue (dry) to pink (wet). The small units would dry in about 12 hours, the larger units about 24 hours. These latest units have very large beads that change from a yellow-amber color (dry) to a deep green (wet). I have had the unit plugged in for about 4 days and it is STILL dark green. For some reason, it will not dry the beads. I do not know if it’s because they made the beads so large that, once saturated, they simply cannot dry out, or if there is another reason. If I do order these again, I will NOT order the large bead units – I’ll either order small beads, or smaller units that contain smaller beads. I tried to find merchant feedback on this, but since it’s handled by Amazon, I do not see a place for an inquiry. # # # # UPDATE! I actually left a unit plugged in too long, trying to dry out the large green beads. I finally decided to hang it in the closet, just to see what would happen. Well, apparently because I left it plugged in for about 5 days, it must have weakened the glue holding the unit together. The plug came out of the unit while hanging, the unit fell on the carpeted closet floor and broke, sending the beads all over (and there are a TON of them). But, at least I was able to see that the beads INSIDE the unit were dry, just the green beads on the viewing window were still green. The problem is still that the green beads (which are the indicator of “wet” or “dry”) are still green, so there’s no practical way to use them. If you can’t tell whether the inside beads are dry or not, it’s useless. I guess you could try to keep track of the dates, but that’s NOT how they are supposed to work. They just need to stick to the smaller beads, I guess! So my conclusion is the same – go for the smaller units/beads.Read more

I gave it one star because it did seem to work as described but unfortunately it came open and all the desiccant spilled all over our van. I’m so grateful our dogs didn’t ingest any of it! Not sure why this happened?? We had it hanging and the small compartment door had come open – and this was the second time that happened. Did we just get a faulty one?? Has anyone else experienced this? If so it could be very dangerous with little ones or pets. So mostly I’m just thankful that the only result is I spent 1/12 hrs vacuuming up all of the little beads. And unfortunately I guess I’m out the money I spent for the purchase.Read more

This is my second E-500. The first one was the original version and worked great. I dropped it mistakenly and had to buy a new one. This “revised” model does not work. It will not recharge. I have had it plugged in for nearly three weeks, shaking it in the morning and at night, and the pellets are still green with a few turning a dark orange. I opened a case with their support about this a while back and was basically told I wasn’t doing it right. I also see that if you don’t fill out the warranty within 30 days of purchase, your warranty is no longer valid. Thankfully it was cheap.Read more

I have a number of these units and they work very well. I’m in the L.A. beach area and things get very humid here. I have two Liberty “Ammunition Cans” which are about 12 cu ft each. One of these in each safe keeps the humidity at about 45%, down from about 65%. Note that these secure cabinets are not airtight so I wouldn’t expect a silica gel desiccant-based dehumidifier to do much more. Silica gel will absorb moisture down to 40%RH, which is certainly adequate to prevent mildew and keep ammunition “fresh”. If you need lower than 40% you’ll need to go with a more expensive desiccant like aluminosilicate molecular sieves, which can operate down to 1% RH, or a powered dehumidifier. Using one of these in each ammo safe requires a recharge about once every four to five weeks, I’ve recently added a second one in each safe and, as expected, the time between recharges seems to have nearly doubled. I get at least two months between recharges. I also keep one of these in my gun safe, which is about 45 cu ft. The safe is equipped an electric (heater type) dehumidifier rod. The E500 brings the humidity down about 5% lower than just the heater rod alone, keeping the safe at about 40% RH. It may not be absolutely necessary, but it also gives me a backup in case the safe heater loses power. If you’ve ever had a safe without some sort of dehumidifier, it can be a disaster. A safe WILL become quite humid inside without one. Years ago, when I was young and dumb and not aware of this, I had a bunch of currency in a safe. Within a few months, the currency and other paperwork in the safe began to smell badly of mildew. In time it would have been destroyed. Note that these units (which, oddly, the Amazon description implies are not electric) require a minimum of 12 hours connected to power to fully recharge. Unless you keep spares around, that leaves you unprotected for a time. Using two at a time eliminates this problem, of course. Personally, I’ve purchased two extras. I leave them on a power strip for two days, then seal them in a zip-lock bag. When one of the ones in use needs to be replenished, I grab a “ready” one out of a bag and cycle the spent one through the same process. You should also be aware the these things do get quite hot during the recharging process. The manufacturers of silica gel desiccant specify a recharge temperature of 240F to 310F for 12 hours. Since these units contain silica gel, they’re going to need to get at least 240F internally during the recharge cycle. There are some reviewers on Amazon who are upset by this, but physics is physics. They’re going to get hot. One last point. There are two versions of the Eva-Dry E500. One has indicating silica gel that ranges from blue (dry) to pink (wet). The other ranges from orange (dry) to green (wet). I have some of each. I don’t know which of them is “newer”, if either is, and there doesn’t seem to be a difference in part numbers between the two. They both seem to work equally well, though I’ve not done any experimentation to prove this. At the very least, this may cause some confusion when reading reviews here, since the color ranges are quite different. [Update 6/19/2016: The “New” version of the Eva-Dry E500 ranges from orange (dry) to green (wet). The original “blue-to-pink” desiccant used cobalt chloride as a moisture indicator. The EU now classifies cobalt chloride as a carcinogen if inhaled which, I’m sure, is why the Eva-Dry folks changed the indicator.] Complaint: Only a minor one. As others have pointed out, the units cannot easily plug in to a wall outlet because they’re too heavy to stay plugged in. That’s not a huge problem. Power strips are cheap these days. But the way the fold-out plug works, the plug prongs are at 90 degrees to the length of the device. This means that one E500 takes up an entire power strip. There is no way to plug more than one of them (or anything else) in on the same typical size strip. If the plug was fitted at 90 degrees to the way it is, you could stack at least two per power strip. I did find larger commercial power strips with the outlets at 90 degrees which allows a number of these to plug in at once. But, as I say, that’s a minor quibble. Overall these work well and I’m on Amazon today to buy two more.Read more

Do NOT waste your money. I got to use this product only and exactly once. The beads were orange, and turned green when wet. This is normal according to the instructions and is exactly what was stated in the instructions. I followed the instructions for drying exactly, using the exact amount of time mentioned, 15 hours. Instead of returning to Orange, the beads in the indicator window are now varying shades of orange and dark blue. The dark blue ones are solid blue and many are cracked. The unit is a piece of garbage. The best part? Apparently the warranty card I mailed in to the company “never arrived” and the warranty is not valid. The item also can not be returned to Amazon because it took longer than the allowable amount of time for it to saturate water so that the drying could be completed. Waste of money, do not buy this product. Dries up water so slowly as to not to be worth even being there, and then apparently can not even dry itself out properly. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!Read more

I placed this in an enclosed tank (bearded dragon with mesh screen lid) right beside the hygrometer. No changes to the humidity registered in the tank, it actually reached it’s highest level this morning. Been in there for 48 hours, beads are orange, not doing anything. Returned.Read more

I don’t have an exhaust fan in the bathroom that gets the most usage for showers, so excess moisture and humidity is always a concern. While we crack open the window to release some of that moisture, it becomes a challenge when it’s both hot and humid outside. Thankfully, I saw this device on sale on Prime Day and decided to give it a try. I was really intrigued when it said that it doesn’t use power to remove moisture because constantly running a large electric dehumidifier can be costly and impractical in a small bathroom. *** NEW & IMPROVED VERSION WAS DELIVERED (Not the same one shown on the site) *** I was also thrilled to receive the new and improved version that was better than the one pictured on Amazon. The display/indicator window is so much larger and clearer. I peeled it out of the package and put it on the sink counter in an area where it won’t be splashed by water. I had my doubts at first because it’s hard to tell if it’s working. After a few days, I noticed a difference – NO MORE MUSTY SMELLS! *** TIP: DON’T PLUG IT INTO THE WALL! *** After a week, the colour of the silicone crystals changed from bright orange (dry) to dark green (wet). You can see the gradual change in colour a few days at a time. When I lifted it off the counter, I noticed a slight difference in weight – it seemed to be heavier when wet. I was excited to plug it in for the first time to ‘dry it out’. It became quite clear that the unit would not hold steady on a regular wall outlet. The manual specifically says not to let the unit drop to the floor. So I decided to plug it into a power bar that lay flat on a table (I placed it on a table top so that I wouldn’t forget to unplug it). Worked like a charm! I would 100% recommend this device for a small bathroom or walk-in closet. Don’t expect this unit to get rid of moisture in a jiffy like a conventional electric dehumidifier would. It passively and constantly works in the background day and night to remove moisture gradually. It made a world of a difference in terms of smell in my bathroom, so that alone made this purchase worth it!Read more

Given the high reviews, I thought I couldn’t go wrong with this item – I was wrong. It was a waste of money, had it stored in the humid room for a week and not only did the humidity not go down, the unit never changed color. I’m using it in a cold storage room, so I’m assuming it simply doesn’t operate properly in lower temperature humidity. THEY SHOULD MAKE THE IDEAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE RANGE CLEAR IN THEIR PRODUCT DESCRIPTION!! Such a waste of money.Read more
