Outsidepride Daikon Radish Cover Crop Seed – 1 LB B) 1 LB

(8 customer reviews)

Fracking Daikon Radish is a deep rooted forage radish that will make an outstanding winter cover crop. The deep taproot of the large rooted plant can help break up the tough, compacted soil, improve water infiltration, suppresses weeds, eliminate pests and stores nitrogen. When planting daikon radish seed as a cover crop, the benefits will be optimized if planted in late summer:
Some people refer to Daikon radish as Oriental radish, Chinese radish, Satsuma radish amd Japanese radish. In fact, Daikon in Japanese means “big root.” It is grown around the world, but primarily here in the U.S. Daikon radish seeds are planted as a cover crop to prevent soil compaction, which then allows soil to absorb more rainfall. Daikon radish greatly reduces soil compaction be aerating the soil
Daikon radishes look different than typical garden radishes. They have large, fast growing leaves and a long white root which looks similar to a pale carrot. Daikon can grow up to 20 inches long with a diameter of 4 inches. Their flavor is milder and less peppery than other radishes and can be eaten raw with a crisp and juicy texture. Or, if cooked, the taste is similar to turnip.
Planting a dense crop of daikon radish helps keep other plants out. Plant daikon seeds a little earlier than other over-wintering cover crops to give it time to grow a thick leaf canopy. Aim for 4 – 10 weeks before the first frost – late August in cooler climates, early September in warmer ones. The seeding rate is 10 – 15 pounds of radish seed per acre. For a smaller area, the seeding rate is 1/2 pound of cover crop seed per 1000 square feet. Cover the seeds 1/4 – 1/2 inch with soil.
Sow Daikon radish seed at 8 – 10 lbs per acre

I bought a 10lb bag and planted these in the late fall in Northern CA. Whatever seeds the birds didn’t get to, germinated wonderfully. We have dry, depleted, hard clay soil here and these have all dug right in and started loosening things up for my other plants to be able to grow. I recommend these to people all the time and will definitely buy again.Read more

I am growing this indoors under LED lights for micro greens (in trays) and sprouting (in half gallon bell jars). Superb germination rate and flavor (the sprouts make excellent eggroll filler, try it!) I realize this was intended to be broadcasted outdoors, but it works great indoors.Read more

I usually have little luck growing root vegetables. I was pleasantly surprised that I’m harvesting 10″-12″ long Daikons. I planted them in November in two locations (zone 9A and 9B). It handles snow and frost just fine. Will definitely buy these seeds again.Read more

These sprouted well in the garden as well as in a jar for shoots. Beautiful long white radishes and lots of light green tender tops to eat for us or the critters. These did well which kinda blew me away really. I have tried others. This flavor is on the lighter side of radish except very young leaves and shoots which have a bit more “radish” to the taste. I will be buying again for sure.Read more

    – Placed radish seeds in a damp paper towel. One day later, they had ALL sprouted. 100% germination rate. – Planted the sprouts in a rock hard mixture of clay, angry dirt and ground up cement that was leftover from construction. – Radish sprouts thrived, despite growing in the soil of Satan, even when I forgot to water them. Eventually I placed an automatic sprinkler in the area. Radish continued to thrive. – Two months later, Radish is about 2.5 feet tall and the radish plants underneath are as thick as a chubby Santa. Here’s hoping by next year, this patch of clay is a lot easier to work with! I have not tasted the radish yet, but I prefer Mu Radish over Daikon anyway.Read more
