It works just fine. My only complaint is the power adapter. WHY, WHY, WHY do people think that you want an adapter that is so big that it takes up or covers THREE outlets on a power strip? No, it couldn’t just take up one and protrude to the side of the strip, it has to run lengthwise down the strip, covering more outlets. There are smaller form factors for a 12v power supply out there. Yeah, I know, “plug in to the end of the strip and let it hang off.” Sorry, that’s already taken up by another giant power adapter that somebody else thinks we want.Read more

The unit worked just as it was advertised. However, there were no instructions with it, luckily I had done some research before purchasing one of these interfaces. Others had told of their mistakes or issues with other units (not this brand) and I tried to use their statements as what not to do. I connected the unit to the SATA drive, then connected the AC power cord and plugged it up, then I connected the USB to my computer. The drive showed up right away and I was able to retrieve my data. Also before unplugging the drive, I “ejected” the USB connection before powering the unit down.Read more

This works great. Needed a bluray drive, didn’t like the small ones so I bought and internal burner(much faster than external and less money)and use this adapter to run it. This cable has much more uses. Never knew I needed this but would have made life easier years ago.Read more

Super easy to use! Gave life back to my old 1tb hdd! I recently installed a ssd into my pc, and I still had old files on my original hard drive I wanted. This made getting the files off the old hdd easy and fast! After getting the files I still wanted transferred from the old hdd to my external backup drive. It was super simple to completely format my old hdd to now make it a nice big external drive that I can use on any of my computers! I highly recommend this device!Read more

Needed to wipe an old HD from bootable Windows XP, to a blank drive for a Linux system I’m putting together from two older systems, and clone my wife’s bootable Windows 7 HDD in her laptop (because the hard drive is failing) so I can replace it with a new drive with the Windows 7 operating system and data ported over to it. Having both of these situations pop up at the same time, when I looked for options for both problems, I found this little item at Amazon. For the bucks it seemed like a good idea. Just started formatting the old 80 GB drive from the donor PC, and it’s working great. One thing I didn’t see mentioned in description or other reviews, is that it has a small blue LED on the top of the plug-in to show data transfer or that it’s working. You have to look at it from above, as it’s too small to see it otherwise, but it’s a nice feature. If you work on your own PC’s, or would like to be able to use an old internal SATA drive as an external hard drive for back up, or (if large enough…) as a really big thumb drive. You can get fairly large 2.5″ laptop hard drives that fit the palm of your hand, heck, you can even get enclosures for them, and that is a way to get a huge portable external hard drive for your laptop bag. Once I’ve got these two jobs done, that’s what I plan next. Get a low cost 1TB drive for my laptop bag, since my work laptop only has 250 GB SSD, and it’s filling up fast. For the buck you can’t really afford not to get one.Read more

I just now opened the box and found it came with a UK power adaptor. No US adaptor. Not particularly useful in North America.Read more

Easy way to turn a spare hard drive or SSD into a USB drive. Great for backups, cloning, & media. You don’t need some overpriced drive case. And a hard drive will run cooler and last longer without a case. I plugged an old 5400 RPM 1TB WD drive into my mini-PC I use on the TV and it works great. I programmed the drive to spin down when not in use, so it’ll last for decades. On USB3 I’m getting about 65 MB/sec which is normal for a 5400 RPM drive. Tried it with an SSD and that was several times faster. Yes, you need the power adapter for the big desktop (3.5″) hard drives, but the little (2.5″) laptop drives and SSDs you don’t, as USB3 will power them fine. The device and its power adapter seem to be well-made, and they don’t put any RFI in my nearby radio equipment. Recommended. –KV5RRead more

The device manager under Windows 10 finds the drive but a letter designation does not appear. Hence, the drive attached to this cable is not accessible. The seller was of no help. However, after Googling this is one solution that works in Windows 10: In the search on the task bar type in disk management, click on the disk management, result, scroll down in the lower partition of the window to find your unlettered device (make sure you do not choose a drive with a letter assignment, right click, choose create simple volume, choose format, your drive will be formatted and a letter assigned, and it will appear in a directory listing, and be usable.Read more

Had a desktop PC with the slim laptop type drive which was unreliable, already had a proper internal tray loading DVD drive but it wouldn’t fit in the case. So needed a USB to SATA adopter with its own power supply rather than rely on the USB connection. Installation is easy, plug the SATA connection into the drive, the USB into the PC and the power supply connector into the socket on the SATA connector. Finally plug in the PSU. A small blue LED on the SATA connector should light and away you go. Result I now have a reliable tray loading DVD on my desk, that is if anything faster than the one in the PC case. Also connected 3.5 HDDs with no problem. Good Points: cables and connectors seem of good quality, assembly is also good with no loose connectors, works with SATA DVD drives as well as HDD. The USB connector is even supplied with a cover to protect it. Only critisism is the USB lead is rather short – probably okay for laptops – but otherwise may cause a problem depending on the location of the USB sockets on your PC, you can get USB plug to USB socket extension cables. So to sum up, a good quality product that does the job at a fair price. I would recommend it.Read more

As a result of upgrading my Desktop PC hardware due to Windows 7 going ‘end of life’ next month [Jan 2020]. I needed a way of connecting on an ad-hoc basis a 5.25″ Optical Drive to my Laptop. The drive is a ‘LightScribe Disc Labelling’ drive and wasn’t compatible with Windows 10 PRO that was loaded on the new replacement PC. Apart from which, the new PC didn’t have a spare 5.25″ expansion bay. It has two, and both are being used with other things. This Powered USB3.0 to SATA III adapter has proven to be a total solution to my issue. I plugged the USB SATA adapter into the back of the optical drive and connected the included 12 volt external power supply. Plugged the USB3.0 lead into my Laptop and the drive was instantly recognised and functional. A few minutes later I was printing a test LightScribe DVD label to prove functionality. OK the optical drive isn’t in a nice decorative case and is just a grey steel sheet finish with black plastic front bezel, but I only need to use it on ad-hoc occasions. The main thing is that this USB3.0 to SATA III Adapter cable does the job and makes it work as a viable solution. It would have been nice if the USB lead had been a bit longer (it is 500mm) but that is a minor issue since I am using it on a table with a Laptop and it doesn’t need to be permanently plugged in. The 12 volt lead on the power supply is about 1 metre, maybe 1.2 as I haven’t measured it. The 12 volt supply is 2 AMP rated by the way, and is a fairly standard moulded plug ‘switch mode’ wall mart type power pack that is very common these days. Just for information. The LightScribe labelling software was made obsolete by Hewlett Packard in 2013 and was originally written for Windows XP to Windows 7. It doesn’t natively install on Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro, but can be made to run on Windows 10 Home (my Laptop) using files downloaded off the Internet from the support site. This site is run by a private enthusiast LightScribe user and provides a high level of ‘How to install on W10’ support, since it is no longer officially HP supported. I only gave Tech Support for the USB Adaptor cable a 3 star rating in this review because the actual USB adaptor product is being sold by Amazon on behalf of the retailer. Thus there is no direct tech support contact that I can see with the original retailer seller. But given its low price, I deem it a throw away item anyway.Read more

Worked without needing instructions to connect SATA Drives at USB 3 speeds. SSD works fine and regular HDD too. The mains adapter is mandatory to power the adapter with 12v/5v and the associated power requirements of USB 3.0 This inexpensive little tool is invaluable to anyone transferring data to/from Drives, whether for recovery, for archiving, Computer Rescue or general purpose interface. I like the non-blinding blue indicator too! Lovely little bit of kit, thanks!Read more

Simple SATA to USB connector to plug a disk or optical drive into a USB connection. I am using it to connect an old Optical drive into my computer after upgrading, so I can still use the old one occasionally. If you are connecting an optical drive you need the additional power as the USB cannot supply enough power to operate it. This worked as soon as I plugged it in, no problems, and I am using Ubuntu 18.04. Wrote a 25GB Blu Ray M-Disc backup using K3b with no trouble, took a while, maybe an hour or so but I just left it to run. This is what I needed for an offline backup. Will also try it with a 100GB Blu Ray M-Disc to back up my Photo and Music.Read more

Recently changed PC cases, and didn’t want to spoil airflow on my new case by porting over my internal blu-ray player (although case did have external bays to allow this). Still wanted to be able to use the old blu-ray player, but on a really occasional basis only. This works perfectly – tried it on the blu-ray player (immediately powered up, and appeared in Windows Explorer when an audio disc was inserted), and tried it for the fun of it, with an old 3.5″ HDD that came out my son’s HP Pavilion PC – again, Windows 10 recognised it immediately, and I was able to view and move files. While you wouldn’t want this as a permanent connection for your PC or laptop (messy), it’s a perfect way to quickly get access to old disks and optical drives if needed. So easy to use, it doesn’t even need instructions – plug SATA connector on the adaptor into the SATA drive, plug power lead from wall socket into adaptor, connect to free USB port on PC – done! Very pleased.Read more
