I have very mixed feelings about this product. On one hand, it is very well done and nicely packaged (except one small beef I’ll mention later.) It is carefully packed so that it is very unlikely that any damage can happen to the aluminum and tungsten balls. The stands are very basic, but functional and all that is needed. The tungsten is worked very nicely and has a really neat, almost 3-d look and feel to it – there is a depth to the metal that is not seen in most metals, and certainly not seen in the aluminum which is just glossy/shiny and looks nice, but nothing that stands out. Most people buying this kit, I would assume like me, are looking for a “Wow” or “Gee Whiz” moment when they pick up or hand someone the tungsten ball because of its unusually high density – even higher than lead, which you ought not be playing around with. And to some degree, it delivers this – it is a very heavy ball for its size. But it wasn’t so heavy that it “wowed” me. For over $100 I was hoping for more of a surprise when I picked it up, or had it placed in my hand. Another slight disappointment, and perhaps this isn’t avoidable – I don’t know enough about metalworking to say for sure – but it is not 100% tungsten. It is 90% tungsten with the remainder being Nickel and Iron I believe. I don’t think that affects the mass significantly. And I mentioned a slight beef with the packaging. The tungsten is packaged in a nifty box with a periodic-table-like marking on the outside of the box showing the symbol (W – Wolfram) and the molecular weight and so on… The Aluminum ball doesn’t have this, breaking up the idea of this being a set. Ultimately, it is hard for me to fault this – it is pretty much what it says it is and I suppose the let-down is my own fault for expecting too much. But the purpose of these reviews is to let people know what you experienced. So my short version is that this is a well-made, high quality package with a round tungsten ball and a round aluminum ball with display rings that is made by a company that obviously cares about their products, but I just wasn’t as excited about the physical characteristics of the elements as I thought that I would be and probably wouldn’t spend $130 this way again. I also think that if I did have to do this again, I would just get the tungsten by itself – the aluminum doesn’t add enough to the package to justify the added cost. I hope this helps someone.Read more

After two bad experiences I’m starting to wonder what kind of quality control they have. My first purchase was the 1″ Tungsten cube, and it is great – no complaints at all. But then it got me hooked, I wanted a bigger one. I bought the 1.5″ and figured I could give the smaller one away as a gift. The 1.5″ cube came damaged – a small chunk broken off the corner, and several scratches. It’s already a leap to spend $140 on a chunk of metal that will mostly just sit around, so for that price you better get a finely-machined specimen that is worthy of presentation and handling. Oh well, bad luck and an easy return. It got me thinking though, a sphere would be better for rolling this around in your hand to feel the weight, so I decided to try again with this sphere set. But alas, quality control strikes again. To be clear, I’m fine with blemishes. Discolorations or variations in the metal grain just make it look more original. What bothers me is obvious damage from tooling, and that’s what we have here with the Aluminum sphere, deep scratches on two separate areas. I even washed them to ensure it wasn’t dirt or grime; but no, another return. Two strikes, won’t be a third. I’ll just be content with my original 1″ cube.Read more
