Ordered a jar of black gesso. Received a jar of black gesso. Applied to the canvas, and the canvas turned black. A+ would recommend.Read more

Great gesso. It makes the canvas and paper nice and smooth and it’s also transparent so you can draw and then put the gesso on top and you can still see the lines. I use it on my sketch book where I do my practice paintings. Dry fast also!Read more

Beware if you’re looking for true gesso – this is more of a clear acrylic medium. Smooth and dries clear with a slight sheen if you want to seal artwork, but does not provide the grit/toothiness of actual gesso for applying pigmented colors like pastels or color pencils. It should really be labeled “clear acrylic medium, not gesso.Read more

The canvas linen-like surfaces are generally rough (not smooth). Apply a small amount of this Gesso to a small section of the canvas and spread a light coating over the canvas with a spreader. This really makes applying paint (I’ve only used acrylics) so smooth — and you don’t have to use as much paint for nice coverage. IF doing a paint-by-number, BE SURE TO USE CLEAR!! White will cover up the lines and numbers!! Have fun!Read more

This gesso is perfect for my needs. I am new to painting and not very experienced. I used this gesso to make black gesso and prime my canvas black. Worked like a charm. The painting I included in this post is a mix of black, gray and white gesso.Read more

Nothing like any other gesso I’ve ever worked with. I can’t for the world understand how this product can have good reviews..or maybe I just got a bad batch. This gesso serves very little coverage and gives a shiny plastic surface. I’m used to working with gesso that dries fast and gives a nice “velvety” surface that has a grip. Not this one! The total opposite! My canvas has been drying for 24h now and it’s still sticky to the touch and sticks to everything. I am so disappointed because it ruined 2 big(80x80cm) canvases for me!!!

When I first went to use this, it appeared to have a milky color and wasn’t sure about it but it dried perfectly clear. My initial idea was to layer this gesso over an acrylic background and then drip Dr. Ph. Martin’s watercolors into the clear gesso and spread the mixture around to get a 3 dimensional effect. It worked perfectly. Excellent product !Read more

I bought this because I needed to apply a layer of gesso to foam, and then paint over the gesso with a silicone-based paint. Latex inhibits the cure of silicone, so I needed a latex-free product. The problem is, this gesso doesn’t adhere to surfaces as well as the latex-based gesso. So the result was, the gesso flaked off and ruined my project after the silicone was applied. I will grant you, this was a very specific instance and need, but the latex-based gesso sticks very well to urethane foam and every other surface I have applied it to. This acrylic gesso does not. It’s a nice opaque product, and it will probably work fine on canvas if that is your purpose. But if you are prepping metal, plastic, or any other surface that is not fabric, I would not trust this gesso.Read more
