Not sure why people keep purchasing this and even leaving positive reviews for it. The enclosure doesn’t get anywhere near the glass transition temperature for anything you print, so its essentially useless in removing water molecules that get trapped in your filament from exposure. You are definitely tricking yourself if you think this is “dehydrating” your filament. The STARTING glass transition temp is 50c, even if the heating element could theoretically reach 50c (which it cant), the fact that it’s all concentrated in one spot of the filament reel. If you check the temp inside the enclosure, its nowhere near 50c even on max. And unfortunately, science doesn’t just happen with magic. If you’re printing with anything other than PLA, it is guaranteed that this box will do nothing to keep your filament dry. The nail in the coffin is the fact that this enclosure is not even sealed to keep out external air. The rim all the way around the top and bottom half is just laid on top of each other and depends on gravity, There is no latch or gasket. Meaning not only does this unit work poorly as a dehydrator, but it also cannot be used for long term storage without using excessive amounts of tape to properly seal it. The control interface on this unit is almost non-existent. You can turn it off, and change the temp. There is no way to set the cycle duration, much less anything else. Also, the thermostat you see is not an accurate depiction of the actual temperature in the unit. The thermostat is showing the temp right next to the heat source, meaning there are parts that will be minus 10 degrees or more. THE VERDICT ————— Although this was a great concept, its actual use factor is very low. It can’t properly keep your filament dry for any period of time, nor can it properly dehydrate existing filament. In order for this product to work as intended, it would need to have a proper seal so that air cannot be exchanged between outside and inside, and it needs a more efficient heating element that can distribute the heat better and get much hotter. The thermostat also needs to be fixed as it is off by almost 10 degrees at times. Please stop buying this, it’s not doing you any good… + IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO STORE YOUR FILAMENT, I recommend large tupperwear type containers that come with a proper seal. Ikea has very large ones which can fit 3 reels, and Amazon has individual cereal boxes that fit filament spools perfectly. This, along with some desiccant bags thrown in will keep your filament dry until you break the seal. + IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO REMOVE MOISTURE from filament that’s already been ruined by the ambient air, the only real way to do it is with an oven. Preset to the glass transition temp of your filament, and just leave it in there for a specified period of time. The variables differ for each filament, so you’ll need to look it up. Be forewarned, this procedure usually takes between 8-12 hours to do properly, and its recommended to not use an oven that cook food in so you don’t contaminate your food with any residual chemicals.Read more

Not super happy with this product. When I received it I had about half a roll of pla filament left so I stuck the roll in and turned on the dryer while I was printing as instructed. It worked super well and I was really happy. Yesterday I put a new roll of filament (1kg) and as I was pulling the filament to push it through the extruder to the hot end I noticed I was having a hard time getting the filament to come out. It’s almost like the rollers can’t handle a heavy/full spool. When pulling the filament out I noticed I was actually pulling the spool and it was moving around. I ended up just putting this roll of filament on my normal spool holder and I’m not running into any issues 25 hours into this current print so it’s not the spool it has to be an issue with this dryer and the rollers. It’s a great little dryer, but I’m not going to be able to use this and print at the same time unless I’m using half spools of filament.Read more

I like it, but it is seriously flawed in 2 aspects. First, it doesn’t show relative humidity. Adding a humidity censor would add 25c to the cost, yet it was left out. Who cares about temperature when humidity is ultimately most important. Second, I’m perplexed as to where the humidity is supposed to go, because there is no venting to remove humidity from the enclosure. I add packets of desiccant to absorb the humidity inside the dryer, but there should be a built-in solution. I love the form factor and ease of operation. I had to manually add a humidity sensor and desiccant to overcome its biggest design flaws.Read more

It gets the job done, though it has a couple design flaws. First the LCD gets hotter than any other area of the chamber, moving the heating mechanisms would help this and prolong LCD life. Second the feeding hole would be good to have an easy to remove plug for rolls already clipped to their rolls so heat doesn’t escape. Otherwise decent, though at the original price a dehydrator that can do 3-5 rolls at a time and double to make jerky is a better choice.Read more

Just what I needed! This thing is pretty amazing. First roll that I tested in it was a roll of black PLA + that had been left out on the shelf for OVER A YEAR and it wasn’t great filament to begin with (which was why it never got used and was just left out). I tried to use it before putting it in the filament dryer, and it wouldn’t even stick to the bed without several layers of glue stick. After 12 hours in this thing, the filament is printing better than it did when it was brand new. So awesome! I had considered that roll a loss before. I used it to print the clips in the photo that hold the dryer on the printer. 0.6mm nozzle and .25 layer height. Anyway, highly recommended if you have rolls of filament that have been sitting out a while or that don’t print well. 9/10 times it’s just because it’s not dry enough.Read more

I need more of these! I never realized that I needed a filament dryer. I heard that you should dry your filament for higher quality prints, but I never bothered trying to until now. It really makes a huge difference in print quality! This unit is sleek looking and has a very easy to use display. Set the temperature and walk away. It’s that easy. I’ve made it a point to dry the filament for a full 6 hour cycle before using it, then keeping the dryer on while printing to avoids moisture issues on long prints. There are two holes for the filament to come out of, depending on what your needs are and the filament spool just rides on two rods on the inside of the unit, so you just drop it in and feed the filament through one of the holes and it’s ready to go. I’m planning on purchasing a few more of these for my multiple printers and so I can have filament drying prior to loading up in the printer.Read more

The dryer itself is great! I had some wet spools I couldn’t use and they produced actual steam on the walls of the unit! After drying some filaments for roughly 6 hours I was able to get great results from otherwise useless filament! Definitely recommended if you can get it at a good priceRead more

The Sunlu filament dryer out of the box will do what it says, drying the filament. However, with its design, it only heats up the bottom of the spool. For better results with the stock dryer, I found it better to regularly turn the spool to try and heat as much as possible. Also, there is nowhere for the moisture to go. For a solution, I found a video on YouTube with a modification adding a fan to the top of the lid to circulate the hot air. This apparently heats the spool more evenly. Maybe adding a small tray for desiccant could help pull out the moisture as well. Overall I’m happy with this product, but will be adding the fan, which is an oversight on Sunlu’s part.Read more

It got the job done, but as other reviews mentioned, there is nowhere for moisture to go. I recommend placing desiccant pouches in here while its running (I taped them under the top of the lid) to absorb the moisture that comes out. With this addition, it actually fixed one of my bad filaments.Read more

My filaments are printing great now, I tried it PLA/PETG/TPU. There some modifications I made, added a fan and move the temperature sensor above. There are some instructions in YouTube to do this.Read more
