Developed in 1983 for jazz and popular music, the JAVA reed incorporates a thicker tip and a more flexible palette than the Tradational reed which allows the reed to vibrate over a larger surface area with maximum elasticity. This type of vertebral column gives the musician much greater playing flexibility, as the resultant elesticity zone is very large. The palette is the zone where the air waves are propgated with the greatest range. From the tip, the waves are absorbed firther in the JAVA reed.

I played tenor 35 years ago and swore by Rico Royal reeds. When I took it up again a couple years ago the sax I bought came with some old Rico Royals. They were just like I remembered, but I bought a box of new ones and they were uniformly disappointing. A sax player friend (who hadn’t taken a 35-year hiatus) confirmed that their quality had suffered over the years. So I tried a Vandoren sample pack. I loved the Red Java reed, which had a rich & lively sound, but bought a box and none of them lived up to the promise of that first reed. I also liked the Green Java sample reed — a little more mellow than the Red — and tried a box of those. This time every reed in the box sounded great. And now I just upgraded from 2.5 to 3 and every reed in that box sounds even better, so I’ve found my new reed of choice.Read more

When I now started learning about different sounds and how different setups affect your sound I started experimenting with different reeds to fine tune my sound. I had just bought a custom mouthpiece and was happy, however V16’s were too dull and ZZ’s were too bright. This landed me right in the middle of both and I love it. hey offer a certain depth and roundness the ZZ’s don’t while not being as dark as a classical sound.Read more

These reeds are really nice. I switched over from Rico Royal and I’m really happy that I did. They’re long lasting and provide a really great sound. I use these as I play in a couple of small community groups including a jazz band and a saxophone ensemble. I’ll be buying these as needed in the future.Read more

My daughter’s music teacher suggested we get her these for ease of playing the higher notes on her bass clarinet. These worked great and helped significantly with the higher notes.Read more

Great product for tenor sax. Have bought other reeds in their Vandoren line and have not been disappointed. I do not play saxophone (piano is my thing), but son and granddaughter play sax as well as other instruments. I’ve been quite happy with Vandoren.Read more

I’ve always used Vandoren reeds but this is the first time I have used these ones. I use a no.2 and have found it to be nice and responsive with a good tone. Reeds are very personal things and what suits some and mouthpieces may not suit others but I would definitely recommend giving these a go. I have a Trevor James bronze SR tenor with an Otto Link 4* mouthpiece.Read more

These reeds are a great all-round workhorse. They sound good, last a decent amount of time and have good consistency. They are expensive but completely worth the money.Read more
