There’s a lot to love about the Canson XL series. When they say mix media, unlike others, they MEAN it. I’ve used pencil, pen, copics, charcoal, and watercolors in this sketchbook, and it’s held up VERY well with all of these. As you can see in my attached pictures, you can draw in pencil, and there’s minimal pencil transfer on facing pages. With watercolor, I will say that you DO get some warping of pages (still great for light washes/studies/tests), but I haven’t experienced much bleed. (There is, sometimes, this funkiness as if the paper’s refusing to accept the watercolor, but if you work it for a few seconds, it tends to take.) Also, the paper does start to break apart if it’s too saturated with water, so I’d definitely stick to the light washes/studies/tests. Don’t go too hardcore with wet media. (I know this seems a little critical, but I have had a lot of success using this sketchbook for wet media! You just shouldn’t fuss with it too much.) With copics, you WILL get some bleed (see attached picture) but just slip a paper behind it the page you’re drawing on. In general, the paper’s really great. Thick, heavy, and durable. You can erase easily and without damaging the paper, and the binding holds up well.Read more

Always my go to mixed media sketchbook! A pretty mainstream sketchbook, but a great one. Pages are thin enough to fold into cards but have enough weight to handle acrylic, watercolor, ink, or whatever I feel like throwing at it! I’ve tried a ton of mediums on these and this paper has never failed me. It’s also great because it’s cheap enough that I don’t have to worry about it too much. My other one has pretty much lived in my backpack for a year and a half and is still in presentable condition. Highly reccomended!Read more

For the price this paper can’t be beat in my opinion. I do mixed media with a lot of wet on wet watercolor. When basically saturated this paper does need to be taped down and does dome and buckle some. BUT- bounces back 95+% when dried (I use air dryer). What impressed me most is paint can be laid down, pushed around, lifted back up and no pilling, multiple layers. I’ve not tried actual scrubbing. I’m very generous with the water and paint. You can see from the pic of the back of the page that none of the watercolors, gel pens or markers bled through.Read more

I love this book. Hands down my favorite sketchbook. I had the 9″ x 12″ pad which was great but am actually really pleased with the 5.5″ x 8.5″ size. Pros: -I had just gotten calligraphy markers & watercolor pens and wanted to practice on paper that wasn’t too thin. These pages are just thick enough that they don’t bleed through to the other side but not too thick where you feel like you are wasting paper practicing doodles. -The smaller size makes it really easy to carry around and hold, sketching on the go. -The spiral binding also makes it easy to flip the pages around so you’re not constantly trying to keep a book flat like with a typical book binding. Cons: -I really can’t think of any. This book is great for beginners who want to practice different mediums like pencil, pens, charcoal, crayon, conte, watercolor, ink, markers, etc.Read more

I’ve used this sketchbook several times, the latest being for my nature journal. The pages are perfect for making notes and sketches as well as adding a light watercolor wash (slightly wet or dry brush). This sketchbook works well for both beginners and pros, especially when you’re trying out new techniques.Read more

Product itself looks excellent, but Amazon delivered a very soiled, scuffed and scratched sketchbook that looked like it had been run over and then wrapped in plastic. Not unusual for Amazon, but not a reflection on the product itself.Read more

Very sturdy, thick paper. Smooth, slight tooth to it, accepts erasing well and ink doesn’t feather. No bleed with micron fineliners, I’ve yet to test copics or watercolor. Accidentally ordered four instead of one, which worried me until I saw the quality of the paper, now I’m glad to have this many around the house. I would definitely recommend it. EDIT: the paper definitely does bleed with Copic markers, but as long as you don’t let it saturate the paper too much it will not affect the next page. If you want something that won’t bleed and that can hold a drawing on either side of each sheet, I’d suggest looking elsewhere. The paper also does warp and buckle a bit when it gets too wet, so I’d be careful. Either way, I still say these sketchbooks are well worth the price and as long as they adequately meet your needs you ought to consider them. If you’re preferred mediums are mostly wet ones, you might want to skip this oneRead more

Ever. None of their various products have EVER disappointed me in any way. Their prices are extremely fair and reasonable, they’re easy to find anywhere (in the US, can’t speak for other countries) and I’m nearly any store, and their quality is amazing. Even when other brands have cheapened their quality and kept their prices (moleskine, I’m looking at you.) Canson had stayed true to their game. Now, don’t go too heavy on your washes, let the layers dry a bit or completely before adding more layers. With markers, I can tell you that I use Sharpies and Color Masters (both alcohol based) and after 2 passes it bleeds – this is expected. Just lay down a sheet underneath your work so it doesn’t bleed into the next page.Read more

It arrived earlier than expected and is the perfect size for my art journalling. The binding is sturdy and both front and back covers are made from chipboard which increases the stability of the book. It has 60 sheets of 5.5″ × 8.5″ 98lb mix media cardstock and is suitable for use with watercolours, acrylic paints, pens, pencils and markers. The cardstock is acid free too which is good. The cardstock is white but not bright white, it is more muted and has a microperforated edge near the binding making it easier to remove pages if you need to. I am very happy with it and can’t wait to use it.Read more

The paper is nice and it works well for sketching and watercolour, i havent tried acrylic on it yet but im sure it would be fine. The paper does bend a little when you apply water based products but not too much so its not too bad. You can tear out the paper which is nice but i havent done that because I prefer to keep all my work in one place. Overall its a nice sketchbook and its easy to take with you in a bag.Read more
